چکیده

Dioecy in flowering plants is evolved from a hermaphrodite ancestor. Transition from hermaphrodite to unisexual flowers has occurred multiple times across the different lineages of the angiosperms. Dioecy in plants is regulated on the physiological level by different phytohormones, on the epigenetic level by small RNAs and DNA methylation, and on the genetic level by sex determining genes. The most specialized mechanism of sex determination is sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes ensure the stable segregation of sexual phenotypes by preventing the recombination of sex determining genes. Despite the continuous efforts of many researchers, sex determining genes of dioecious plants have not yet been cloned. Concerted efforts on various model systems are necessary to understand the complex mechanism of sex determination in plants. Papaya is a tropical fruit tree with 3 sex forms, male, hermaphrodite, and female. Sexuality in papaya is determined by an XY chromosome system that is in an early evolutionary stage. The male and hermaphrodite characteristics of papaya are controlled by two different types of Y chromosomes: Y and Yh. Vast amounts of information in the area of genetic, genomic, and epigenetic studies in papaya have accumulated over the last few decades. The wealth of these available

Digital Transcriptome Analysis of Putative Sex-Determination Genes in Papaya (Carica papaya)

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a trioecious plant species that has male, female and hermaphrodite flowers on different plants. The primitive sex chromosomes genetically determine the sex of the papaya. Although draft sequences of the papaya genome are already available, the genes for sex determination have not been identified, likely due to the complicated structure of its sex-chromosome sequences. ...

The origin of the non-recombining region of sex chromosomes in Carica and Vasconcellea.

Carica and Vasconcellea are two closely related sister genera in the family Caricaceae, and were once classified as two sections under Carica. Sex chromosomes have been found in papaya and originated approximately 2-3 million years ago. The objectives of this study were to determine whether sex chromosomes have evolved in Vasconcellea. Six X/Y gene pairs were cloned, sequenced and analyzed from...

Sex determination in papaya.

Sex determination is an intriguing system in trioecious papaya. Over the past seven decades various hypotheses, based on the knowledge and information available at the time, have been proposed to explain the genetics of the papaya's sex determination. These include a single gene with three alleles, a group of closely linked genes, a genic balance of sex chromosome over autosomes, classical XY c...

Molecular Analysis of Sex Chromosome Evolution in Papaya By

Papaya is a semi-woody tree that produces fruit rich in vitamins and minerals. It is trioecious with male, female, and hermaphrodite plants. Though many theories have been suggested in the past, papaya sex is determined by a pair of nascent sex chromosomes; females have two X chromosomes, males have an X and a Y, and hermaphrodites have an X and a Y, which varies slightly from the male Y. Any c...

Papaya Dieback in Malaysia: A StepTowards A New Insight of Disease Resistance

A recently published article describing the draft genome of Erwiniamallotivora BT-Mardi (1), the causal pathogen of papaya dieback infection in Peninsular Malaysia, hassignificant potential to overcome and reduce the effect of this vulnerable crop (2). The authors found that the draft genome sequenceis approximately 4824 kbp and the G+C content of the genomewas 52-54%, which is very similarto t...
