چکیده

[1] Seismically, the African superplume is known to have a sharp lateral transition in VS and an interface between seismic anomalies with high relief. Such a structure is usually unstable in conventional thermo-chemical convection models. Using a compressible thermo-chemical convection model in which each material has a distinct equation of state, we find an expanded regime of metastable superplumes. In the preferred model, superplume material has a bulk modulus 6% higher and density 2.25% higher than ambient mantle. The inferred physical properties of the superplume are consistent with subducted oceanic crust, simultaneously satisfying seismological, geodynamical, mineralogical and geochemical constraints.Citation: Tan, E., and M. Thermochemical structures within a spherical mantle: Superplumes or piles?

[1] Heterogeneous compositional mantle models are frequently invoked to explain some observations obtained from geochemistry and seismology. In particular, two regions in the Earth’s lower mantle, under the Pacific and Africa, are often interpreted as being either piles or superplumes of dense material. We perform numerical modeling of thermochemical convection in a three-dimensional spherical ...

Superplumes from the core-mantle boundary to the lithosphere: implications for heat flux.

Three-dimensional modeling of upper-mantle anelastic structure reveals that thermal upwellings associated with the two superplumes, imaged by seismic elastic tomography at the base of the mantle, persist through the upper-mantle transition zone and are deflected horizontally beneath the lithosphere. This explains the unique transverse shear wave isotropy in the central Pacific. We infer that th...

Mantle superplumes induce geomagnetic superchrons

We use polarity reversal systematics from numerical dynamos to quantify the hypothesis that the modulation of geomagnetic reversal frequency, including geomagnetic superchrons, results from changes in core heat flux related to growth and partial collapse of the two seismically-imaged lower mantle superplumes. We parameterize the reversal frequency sensitivity from numerical dynamos in terms of ...

Compressible thermochemical convection and application to lower mantle structures

[1] A new finite element code for compressible thermochemical convection is developed to study the stability of a chemical layer at the base of the mantle. Using composition-dependent compressibility and a density difference between compositions at a reference pressure, a composition-dependent density profile is derived. Together with depth-dependent thermal expansion, this combination of param...

Inferences on flow at the base of Earth's mantle based on seismic anisotropy.

We applied global waveform tomography to model radial anisotropy in the whole mantle. We found that in the last few hundred kilometers near the core-mantle boundary, horizontally polarized S-wave velocities (VSH) are, on average, faster (by approximately 1%) than vertically polarized S-wave velocities (VSV), suggesting a large-scale predominance of horizontal shear. This confirms that the D" re...
