چکیده

Amplitude compression processing is used to reduce the amplitude level variations of speech to fit the reduced dynamic ranges of sensorineural impaired listeners. However this processing results in spectral smearing due in part to reduced peak-to-valley ratios. Presented here are two variations of a compression processing algorithm based on a sinusoidal speech model that preserves the important spectral peaks. Both models operate on a time-varying, frequencydependent basis to adjust to the speech variations and the listenerís hearing profile. Preliminary subject tests indicate benefit from preserving spectral contrast. Enhancing spectral contrast is possible with the algorithm presented here.

Physiological assessment of contrast-enhancing frequency shaping and multiband compression in hearing aids.

Spectral enhancement is now being used in many hearing aids in an attempt to compensate for broadened cochlear filtering. However, spectral enhancement may be counteracted by multiband-compression algorithms designed to compensate for the reduced dynamic range of the impaired cochlea. An alternative scheme for spectral enhancement, contrast-enhancing frequency shaping (CEFS), has been proposed,...

Frequency Shaping in Hearing Aids

Contrast-enhancing frequency shaping (CEFS) produces a better representation of formants in the auditory nerve (AN) response of an impaired ear than conventional amplification schemes (Miller et al., 1999; Sachs et al., 2002). CEFS compensates for the broadened tuning curves and elevated thresholds of an impaired ear by adjusting the relative amplitudes of the formants without distorting the sp...

Two-state compression of spectral tilt: individual differences and psychoacoustical limitations to the benefit from compression.

A psychoacoustic rationale was developed for a hearing aid design in which compression of spectral tilt was incorporated without any instantaneous nonlinear distortion. This involved switching between a 'flat' and a 'rising' frequency response; the switching was done slowly to avoid audible transients and was controlled by feedback derived from comparison of output levels in low- and high-frequ...

Preferred Compression Speed for Speech and Music and Its Relationship to Sensitivity to Temporal Fine Structure

Multichannel amplitude compression is widely used in hearing aids. The preferred compression speed varies across individuals. Moore (2008) suggested that reduced sensitivity to temporal fine structure (TFS) may be associated with preference for slow compression. This idea was tested using a simulated hearing aid. It was also assessed whether preferences for compression speed depend on the type ...

A psychophysical evaluation of spectral enhancement.

Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss have well-documented elevated hearing thresholds; reduced auditory dynamic ranges; and reduced spectral (or frequency) resolution that may reduce speech intelligibility, especially in the presence of competing sounds. Amplification and amplitude compression partially compensate for elevated thresholds and reduced dynamic ranges but do not remediate the ...
