LA UR-94-3701 Prospects of Solving Grand Challenge Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
The recent woes of the supercomputer industry and changes in federal funding have caused some scientists to re-evaluate the means by which they hope to solve Grand Challenge problems. I evaluate the potential of Massively Parallel Processors (MPP) within this context and the state of today's MPP. I stress that for solving large-scale problems MPP are crucial and that it is essential to seek a balance between CPU performance, memory access time, inter-node communications, and I/O. To achieve this it is important to preserve certain characteristics of the hardware while selecting the hottest processor to design the machine around. I emphasize that for long term stability and growth of parallel computing priority should be given to standardizing software so that the same code can run on diierent platforms and on machines ranging from clusters of workstations to MPP.

Open, Stable Autonomic Adaptation: a Grand Challenge (extended Abstract)
Treating autonomic systems as solving individual, isolated problems misses the opportunity to consider adaptation as an object of study in its own right. We propose a grand challenge of supporting adaptation in an open and stable manner, embracing the evolution of system goals and constraints over time without sacrificing our ability to describe, implement and analyse autonomic solutions. We su...
متن کاملTowards Problem Solving Environments for High Performance Computing
A typical computing environment for solving Grand Challenge Problems consists of a high performance graphics workstation acting as a front-end, connected to a variety of remote supercomputers. A Problem Solving Environment (PSE) is a system of programs designed to assist a scientist in solving his/her problems without detailed understanding of parallel machines, and guiding him/her through the ...
متن کاملPhysics Prospects at Future E
I discuss the physics prospects at future high–energy ee linear colliders. After summarizing some aspects of these future machines, I will review a few topics in the Standard Model which can be studied at these colliders: top quark, W/Z vector bosons and Higgs particles physics. A brief discussion on the exploration of extensions of the Standard Model such as Supersymmetry and Grand Unified The...

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced the first 14 targets of a US$ 200 million programme on global disease research, on 17 October. The " Grand Challenges in Global Health " initiative, launched by Bill Gates at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2003, is intended to encourage innovations in science and technology in order to remove some of the obstacles to mo...
متن کاملLA-UR 93-2645, HEP-TH/yymmnn Majorana-Like (j, 0) ⊕ (0, j) Representation Spaces: Construction and Physical Interpretation ∗
We present a formalism that extends the Majorana-construction to arbitrary spin (j, 0)⊕(0, j) representation spaces. For the example case of spin-1, a wave equation satisfied by the Majorana-like (1, 0) ⊕ (0, 1) spinors is constructed and its physical content explored. The (j, 0) ⊕ (0, j) Majorana-construct is found to possess an unusual classical and quantum field theoretic structure. Relevanc...
