On Qualitatively Unstable Objects

چکیده
I present in this paper a certain classification of objects with respect to their qualitative stability, i.e., with respect whether they change their qualities. The resulting classification is a flat typology of objects with two facets and three types in each facet. Assuming this classification the paper is then focused on one of these types: very weakly unstable objects. In particular, I discuss the problem of their persistence and attempt to sketch identity criteria over time.

Unstable dynamics of a periodically driven oscillator in the presence of noise.
Two qualitatively different unstable dynamical behaviours are shown to arise from the application of a periodic input to a simple mathematical model of an oscillator in the presence of noise. Rhythms similar to quasiperiodic dynamics may arise when there is a low amplitude periodic input, while with high amplitude inputs, patterns with irregular skipped or intercalated beats are found. These tw...
متن کاملYarkovsky origin of the unstable asteroids in the 2/1 mean motion resonance with Jupiter
The 2/1 mean motion resonance with Jupiter, intersecting the main asteroid belt at ≈3.27 au, contains a small population of objects. Numerical investigations have classified three groups within this population: asteroids residing on stable orbits (i.e. Zhongguos), those on marginally stable orbits with dynamical lifetimes of the order of 100 Myr (i.e. Griquas), and those on unstable orbits. In ...

Self-organized structures in networks with spike-timing dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP) are likely to play a central role for information processing in the brain. In the present study we derive a reaction-diffusion-like formalism for plastic feed-forward networks of nonlinear rate-based model neurons with a correlation sensitive learning rule inspired by and being qualitatively similar to ...
متن کاملSpinflation from Geometric Tachyon
We study the assisted inflation scenario from the rolling of N BPS D3-brane into the NS5-branes, on a transverse geometry of R3 × S1, coupled to four dimensional gravity. We assume that the branes are distributed along S1 and the probe D3branes spin along R3 plane. Qualitatively this process is similar to that of N-tachyon assisted inflation on unstable D-branes. We further study the spinflatio...
متن کاملOn the control of unstable objects: the dynamics of human stick balancing.
Objects that we control and interact with are often unstable. Riding a bicycle, balancing a tray of food, maintaining the oscillations of a hula-hoop, and even standing upright are exemplary tasks that require the control of an unstable object. Although it is difficult to characterize the physics of complex object interactions, we are adept at learning and performing these tasks in everyday lif...
