Public access defibrillation: where does it work?

چکیده

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is recognized as a serious public health problem, accounting for 250 000 to 300 000 deaths per year; it is now the third-leading cause of death behind cancer and nonsudden cardiovascular deaths.1,2 Immediate, well-performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation are the only out-of-hospital interventions that improve outcomes.3 The chain of survival relies on lay responders and emergency medical services (EMS) to initiate the potentially life-saving procedures of CPR and defibrillation.

Cost effectiveness of defibrillation by targeted responders in public settings.

BACKGROUND Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is frequent and has poor outcomes. Defibrillation by trained targeted nontraditional responders improves survival versus historical controls, but it is unclear whether such defibrillation is a good value for the money. Therefore, this study estimated the incremental cost effectiveness of defibrillation by targeted nontraditional responders in public set...

Defibrillation in rural areas.

AIM OF THE STUDY Automated external defibrillation (AED) and public access defibrillation (PAD) have become cornerstones in the chain of survival in modern cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Most studies of AED and PAD have been performed in urban areas, and evidence is scarce for sparsely populated rural areas. The aim of this review was to review the literature and discuss treatment strategies fo...

Public access defibrillation: a review.

Sudden cardiac death remains a worldwide health problem. More than 1000 such deaths occur daily in the United States; most are secondary to ventricular fibrillation (VF). Unfortunately, only about 5% of victims survive. Sudden cardiac death is the most common “accidental” death in the US. A combined total of all airline, automobile, and drowning deaths would not equal the number of accidental o...

The introduction of public access defibrillation to a university community: the University of Virginia public access defibrillation program.

The use of the automatic external defibrillator (AED) can significantly reduce the time to defibrillation in patients with sudden cardiac death. This early defibrillation via the AED can also improve patient outcome, including survival and neurologic status among survivors. We undertook the addition of a public access defibrillation program at a large mid-Atlantic university. In our design of t...

Is public access defibrillation needed in Hong Kong?

The survival rate for non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Hong Kong is low (1.25%-1.6%). Despite the reduced time interval between call receipt and first defibrillatory shock to 11.12 minutes during the past decade, the time interval between collapse/recognition and first defibrillatory shock, at 14.25 minutes, is too long. Studies of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest performed in Hong...
