Dynamic Compression of Articular Cartilage Augments Interstitial Transport of a Glucose Analog
ثبت نشده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION: Interstitial solute transport is essential for cellular activities in avascular articular cartilage. Increased solute transport via fluid convection has been proposed as a mechanism by which dynamic loading increases cell metabolism in cartilage explants; this may have application in mechanical conditioning of engineered cartilage constructs. However, optimal loading conditions have not been determined for specific solutes. The goal of this study was to determine effects of radially unconfined dynamic compression over a range of frequencies and amplitudes on desorption of a D-glucose analog from cartilage explant disks. Results may aid in understanding of cartilage physiology and targeted delivery of bioactive substances.

Finite Element Analysis of Permeation Tests on Articular Cartilage under Different Testing Conditions Using COMSOL Multiphysics
Articular cartilage is composed of a charged solid matrix (proteoglycan and collagen fibres) and an interstitial fluid phase. The tissue is characterized by a very low permeability that guarantee the support and distribution of loads in diarthrodial joints and the transport of nutrients to chondrocytes. The permeability of articular cartilage decreases for increasing deformation of the solid ma...

متن کاملExperimental verification and theoretical prediction of cartilage interstitial fluid pressurization at an impermeable contact interface in confined compression.
Interstitial fluid pressurization has long been hypothesized to play a fundamental role in the load support mechanism and frictional response of articular cartilage. However, to date, few experimental studies have been performed to verify this hypothesis from direct measurements. The first objective of this study was to investigate experimentally the hypothesis that cartilage interstitial fluid...
متن کاملTissue-engineered articular cartilage exhibits tension-compression nonlinearity reminiscent of the native cartilage.
The tensile modulus of articular cartilage is much larger than its compressive modulus. This tension-compression nonlinearity enhances interstitial fluid pressurization and decreases the frictional coefficient. The current set of studies examines the tensile and compressive properties of cylindrical chondrocyte-seeded agarose constructs over different developmental stages through a novel method...
متن کاملCombining Targeted Metabolomic Data with a Model of Glucose Metabolism: Toward Progress in Chondrocyte Mechanotransduction
Osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease likely involving altered metabolism of the chondrocytes in articular cartilage. Chondrocytes can respond metabolically to mechanical loads via cellular mechanotransduction, and metabolic changes are significant because they produce the precursors to the tissue matrix necessary for cartilage health. However, a comprehensive understanding of how energy met...
