LA-UR-08-1690 30 Associate Directorate for Theory, Simulation, and Computation (ADTSC) LA-UR-09-01756 Understanding the nature of compressible turbulence is of fundamental importance in many applications ranging from astrophysics to combustion and aerospace engineering. Highly compressible turbulence is now thought to control star formation in dense molecular clouds [1]. The ability to parameterize the effects of turbulence is necessary for the modeling of exothermic reacting flows and high-speed flows and is a required ingredient for designing the next generation of ramjet engines and hypersonic vehicles.

Forcing for statistically stationary compressible isotropic turbulence
Linear forcing has been proposed as a useful method for forced isotropic turbulence simulations because it is a physically realistic forcing method with a straightforward implementation in physical-space numerical codes T. متن کاملSubgrid-scale modeling of isotropic turbulence in compressible magnetohydrodynamic large eddy simulations
Despite the ever increasing availability of computational resources, fully resolved simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence are not going to be feasible for quite some time. For this reason, large eddy simulations (LES) have been introduced that only resolve large scales. In LES a low-pass filter is applied to the evolution equations, which introduces additional unknown terms. These...
متن کاملSubgrid-scale modeling for Large-eddy simulations of compressible turbulence
We present two phenonmenological subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large-eddy simulations (LES) of compressible turbulent flows. A nonlinear model and a stretched-vortex model are tested in LES of compressible decaying isotropic turbulence. Results of LES at 32 resolution are compared to corresponding 256 direct numerical simulations (DNS). We use numerical schemes based on compact differences and...
متن کاملAssessment of high-resolution methods for numerical simulations of compressible turbulence with shock waves
Flows in which shock waves and turbulence are present and interact dynamically occur in a wide range of applications, including inertial confinement fusion, supernovae explosion, and scramjet propulsion. Accurate simulations of such problems are challenging because of the contradictory requirements of numerical methods used to simulate turbulence, which must minimize any numerical dissipation t...
متن کاملA hybrid numerical simulation of isotropic compressible turbulence
A novel hybrid numerical scheme with built-in hyperviscosity has been developed to address the accuracy and numerical instability in numerical simulation of isotropic compressible turbulence in a periodic domain at high turbulent Mach number. The hybrid scheme utilizes a 7th-order WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) scheme for highly compressive regions (i.e., shocklet regions) and an 8...
