چکیده
t a t t Background. Microembolism during cardiopulmonary ypass has been suggested as being the predominant ause of neurocognitive disorders after cardiac surgery. hed blood, normally retransfused into the patient durng cardiopulmonary bypass, is a major source of lipid icroemboli in the brain capillaries. A newly developed echnique based on acoustic standing-wave separation of articles in fluid in microchannels, with the capacity to emove lipid particles in blood, is presented. Methods. A separator consisting of eight parallel, highdelity microfabricated channels was actuated with an ltrasound field to create a standing wave. Three differnt concentrations of lipid particles (diameter, 0.3 m) ere added to blood samples with increasing hemat-

Longer duration of cardiopulmonary bypass is associated with greater numbers of cerebral microemboli.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Many patients who undergo cardiac surgery assisted with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) experience cerebral injury, and microemboli are thought to play a role. Because an increased duration of CPB is associated with an increased risk of subsequent cerebral dysfunction, we investigated whether cerebral microemboli were also more numerous with a longer duration of CPB. METHO...

Background: Ultrasound (US) has been used in neuroprotection after cerebral ischemia, however the mechanism of action remains unclearly. We have previously shown the protective effect of ultrasound on infarction volume and brain edema in ischemic brain injured at normothermic condition. Ultrasound may also amplify the effect of fibrinolytic medications in thrombolysis process .We have also show...
متن کاملVitamin E Derivative Alpha-Tocotrienol Failed to Show Neuroprotective Effects after Embolic Stroke in Rats
Objective(s) Previous studies have demonstrated that pretreatment with alpha-tocotrienol (a-TCT) can reduce ischemic damage in mice following middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. It is also reported to decrease stroke- dependent brain tissue damage in 12-Lox-deficient mice and spontaneously hypertensive rats. In the present study, the neuroprotective effects of a-TCT and rosiglitazone (RGZ)...
متن کاملReview Paper: A Review on Brain Stimulation Using Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound
Brain stimulation techniques are important in both basic and clinical studies. Majority of well-known brain stimulating techniques have low spatial resolution or entail invasive processes. Low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) seems to be a proper candidate for dealing with such deficiencies. This review recapitulates studies which explored the effects of LIFU on brain str...
متن کاملSize Distribution of Air Bubbles Entering the Brain during Cardiac Surgery
BACKGROUND Thousands of air bubbles enter the cerebral circulation during cardiac surgery, but whether high numbers of bubbles explain post-operative cognitive decline is currently controversial. This study estimates the size distribution of air bubbles and volume of air entering the cerebral arteries intra-operatively based on analysis of transcranial Doppler ultrasound data. METHODS Transcr...
