Trace Metals in the Bed Sediment of Small Urban Streams
نویسندگان
چکیده
Trace metals (TMs) are still a serious problem in urban streams because of their toxicity and continuing significant levels in the aquatic environment, especially in bed sediments. Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were monitored in the sediments of several small streams in the Prague area. These streams differ in the main source of pollution (combined sewer overflow CSO, storm water drain – SWD, or waste water treatment plant WWTP). The potential TMs hazard was assessed by several indexes, and the dependence of TMs concentrations on various sediment material characteristics was evaluated. The bioavailability of TMs was also assessed by comparing the binding strength of metals in the sediment and their concentrations in aquatic organisms in these creeks. Of the metals studied, Cd is the most available from sediments, but the other metals were also easily released from the sediment to the liquid phase. There were also differences in TMs bioavailability from sediments of creeks with different main pollution source, and was higher in creeks impacted by WWTP and SWD.

This study was carried out to find any relative concentrations of the trace metals (Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb) in the liver and the kidney of Acipenser persicus and in the surficial sediments of the west coast of The Southern Caspian Sea. Twenty five samples of the Acipenser persicus (Persian sturgeon) and ten samples of the sediments were taken from five fishing stations in autumn 2001. The tissues we...

متن کاملInvestigation on anthropogenic and natural share of heavy metals in surface sediments of Shadegan wetland
Accumulation of trace metals in sediment can cause severe ecological impacts. The present study determines the elemental concentrations and chemical partitioning of heavy metals in surface sediment of Shadegan wetland. Shadegan wetland is one of the most important wetlands in southwest of Iran and it is in Ramsar-listed wetlands. For this purpose, 7 sampling stations were selected for sediment ...
متن کاملSediment fluxes and exchange between an urban salt marsh and Long Island Sound Troy
Salt marshes provide a broad range of valuable ecological services. In urban settings these services are magnified in importance, as marshes are typically smaller, serve more concentrated human populations, and face more dramatic anthropogenic pressures. Unfortunately, our knowledge of material exchange between marshes and coastal waters is limited, particularly in urban areas. Tidal flux studi...
