Delayed Radiation Necrosis of Brain Evaluated Positron Emission Tomography. Tohoku J. exp. Med., 1988, 155 (3), 247-260 In four patients highly suspected of having delayed radiation necrosis of the brain, regional cerebral blood flow and metabolism were studied by using positron emission tomography (PET) with the 150-labelled gases, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG). All four patients showed marked decreases in glucose and oxygen consumption in the lesion with that suspected pathology in comparison with those in normal brain parenchyma. Two of them were histologically proved to have radiation injuries (one was radiation necrosis and another was early delayed reactions). But one patient was histologically proved to have a recurrent tumor. Although metabolic study with PET using 18FDG is generally an excellent procedure for differentiation between radiation injuries and recurrent brain tumor, these results imply that in some cases the differential diagnosis is difficult even with 18FDG. The present study demonstrated considerably more pronounced reduction in the metabolism than the decrease of the blood flow in the lesion with radiation necrosis. This result would indicate that the primary effect causing the radiation necrosis is a direct effect of irradiation on neural tissue rather than the capillary damage. radiation necrosis ; brain ; positron emission tomography

Detection of Alzheimer\\\\\\\'s Disease using Multitracer Positron Emission Tomography Imaging
Alzheimer's disease is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and demonstration of amyloid plaques. Individual positron emission tomography tracers may reveal specific signs of pathology that is not readily apparent on inspection of another one. Combination of multitracer positron emission tomography imaging yields promising results. In this paper, 57 Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging ini...
متن کاملThe effect of fasting on Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging
As a nuclear approach, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging technique which is based on the detection of gamma ray pairs emitted by a positron-emitting radionuclide. There are certain limitations to this technique such as normal tissue uptake. Therefore, it has been recommended that patients prepare before scanning. Fasting for a short while before PET imaging is an exampl...
متن کاملRadiation injury of the brain.
The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings in radiation injury of the brain are reviewed. Late radiation injury is the major, dose-limiting complication of brain irradiation and occurs in two forms, focal and diffuse, which differ significantly in clinical and radiologic features. Focal and diffuse injuries both include a wide spectrum of abnormalities, from subclinical changes detectabl...
متن کاملAn overview on Ga-68 radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography applications
Gallium-68 a positron emitter radionuclide, with great impact on the nuclear medicine, has been widely used in positron emission tomography (PET) diagnosis of various malignancies in humans during more recent years especially in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). The vast number of 68Ge/68Ga related generator productions, targeting molecule design (proteins, antibody fragments,...
متن کاملIs there still a place for SPET in the era of PET brain imaging?
Although positron emission tomography (PET) may be credited with providing the impetus for the new clinical interest in functional neuroimaging and currently is an increasingly important imaging tool for noninvasive assessment of brain tumors, single-photon emission tomography (SPET) has offered an alternative technique with the relative advantages of lower price and wide availability. Brain SP...
