چکیده

It has previously been shown that the reinforcing and dependence-producing properties of nicotine depend to a great extent on activation of nicotinic receptors within the ventral tegmental area (VTA), i.e. the site of origin of the mesolimbocortical dopaminergic projection. Based on the data reviewed in the present study, it is suggested that nicotine by stimulating presynaptic a7 nicotinic receptors within the VTA, that are probably localized on glutamatergic afferents from the medial prefrontal cortex, produces sequentially an increase in glutamate concentrations, stimulation of NMDA receptors found on dopamine (DA)-containing neurons in the VTA, enhanced firing activity of VTA-DA neurons, augmented DA release in the nerve terminal regions, and enhanced c-fos expression in the dopaminergic projection areas through activation of D1-DA receptors. In addition, it appears that a7 nicotinic receptors within the VTA are directly involved in nicotine-related reward and withdrawal responses. These data may be instrumental in understanding how nicotine interacts with the mesolimbocortical dopaminergic system, which is perhaps the most important component of the neural mechanisms underlying nicotine dependence. These results may also contribute to unraveling the cellular basis of nicotine’s association with neuropsychiatric disorders, thereby offering the prospect of new therapeutic advances for their treatment. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Maximal cubic graphs with diameter 4

We prove that there is no cubic graph with diameter 4 on 40 vertices. This implies that the maximal number of vertices of a (3,4)-graph is 38. ? 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Apamin blocks SK channels responsible for long-lasting hyperpolarization following the action potential. Using an olfactory associative task, the effect of an intracerebroventricular 0.3 ng apamin injection was tested on learning and memory. Apamin did not modify the learning of the procedure side of the task or the learning of the odor-reward association. To test reference memory specifically,...

The effects of several N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptorand sigma receptor-related compounds on the discriminative stimulus effects of phencyclidine (PCP) were examined in rats trained to discriminate PCP (1.5 mg/kg, i.p.) from saline under a two-lever fixed ratio 20 schedule of food reinforcement. PCP produced a dose-dependent increase in PCP-appropriate responding. A non-competitive NMDA r...

Two classes of ternary codes and their weight distributions

In this paper we describe two classes of ternary codes, determine their minimum weight and weight distribution, and prove their properties. We also present four classes of 1-designs that are based on the classes of ternary codes.

On the Average Similarity Degree between Solutions of Random k-SAT and Random CSPs

Abstract To study the structure of solutions for random k-SAT and random CSPs, this paper introduces the concept of average similarity degree to characterize how solutions are similar to each other. It is proved that under certain conditions, as r (i.e. the ratio of constraints to variables) increases, the limit of average similarity degree when the number of variables approaches infinity exhib...
