چکیده

Rodents demonstrate an outstanding capability of texture discrimination and shape recognition with their whiskers (vibrissae). Many neurophysiological and behavioural studies reported that active whisking plays a critical role on tactile perception. However, the role and limitation of passive sensing has not been studied in detail. In this paper, we compare passive sensing and active sensing for distance estimation. Our experiments reveal that the estimation of force or contact distance through passive sensing is significantly impaired by noisy sensor readings of deflection angles, and so it is hard to obtain high-fidelity information about force and distance. In contrast, active sensing by whisking or robot movement provides precise distance information.

SCRATCHbot: Active Tactile Sensing in a Whiskered Mobile Robot

The rodent vibrissal (whisker) system is one of the most widely investigated model sensory systems in neuroscience owing to its discrete organisation from the sensory apparatus (the whisker shaft) all the way to the sensory cortex, its ease of manipulation, and its presence in common laboratory animals. Neurobiology shows us that the brain nuclei and circuits that process vibrissal touch signal...

Biomimetic vibrissal sensing for robots.

Active vibrissal touch can be used to replace or to supplement sensory systems such as computer vision and, therefore, improve the sensory capacity of mobile robots. This paper describes how arrays of whisker-like touch sensors have been incorporated onto mobile robot platforms taking inspiration from biology for their morphology and control. There were two motivations for this work: first, to ...

Radial Distance Estimation with Tapered Whisker Sensors

Rats use their whiskers as tactile sensors to sense their environment. Active whisking, moving whiskers back and forth continuously, is one of prominent features observed in rodents. They can discriminate different textures or extract features of a nearby object such as size, shape and distance through active whisking. There have been studies to localize objects with artificial whiskers inspire...

Active touch sensing: finger tips, whiskers, and antennae

Active touch can be described as the control of the position and movement of tactile sensing systems by reaching out and exploring—sensing by “touching” as opposed to being touched. The active nature of these movements entails precise control of the sensory apparatus, which is task-specific and maximizes sensory information from the environment. This collection brings together a group of articl...
