Non-verbal Communication in Dialogue: Alignment between Eyebrow Raises and Pitch Accents in English
نویسنده
چکیده
When we engage in conversation, we use both verbal and non-verbal communication, including facial expressions. The latter have been investigated mainly in relation to the expression of emotion, but research into their connection with speech is still scarce. This is surprising, considering its relevance for psycholinguistic theories of speech production and for the development of multimodal communication systems. Some studies have associated eyebrow raising with intonation, but there is no strong empirical support. A few exceptions include studies with synthetic animations in Dutch that have reported a preference for short eyebrow raises to be aligned with pitch accents (Krahmer and Swerts, 2004). The purpose of the current study was to investigate eyebrow raising in dialogue to test the hypothesis that brow raises are aligned with pitch accents in English. Since pitch accents have roles in discourse, if such alignment exists brow raises may contribute to these linguistic roles.

Pitch, Eyebrows and the Perception of Focus
We report on an experiment with a Talking Head, aimed at finding out the relative contributions of pitch accents and rapid eyebrow movements for the perception of focus. For this purpose, we use a “dialogue reconstruction” experiment: subjects have to perform a perceptual task in which they have to determine on the basis of the distributions of pitch accent and eyebrow movements what the focus ...
متن کاملThe Peak Alignment of Prenuclear and Nuclear Accents among Advanced L2 English Learners
Previous studies have shown that even advanced L2 speakers align pitch accents differently from native speakers, and the only possibility for full attainment of L2 is through immersion. This study investigated two groups of five advanced L2 English speakers who first exposed to English through early immersion. Their alignment of prenuclear and nuclear accents was compared with that of the nativ...
متن کاملOn the acoustic correlates of high and low nuclear pitch accents in American English
Earlier findings in Shue et al. (2007, 2008) raised questions about the alignment of nuclear pitch accents in American English, which are addressed here by eliciting both high and low pitch accents in two different target words in several different positions in a single-phrase utterance (early, late but not final, and final) from 20 speakers (10 male, 10 female). Results show that the F0 peak a...
متن کاملMind the Peak: When Museum is Temporarily Understood as Musical in Australian English
Intonation languages signal pragmatic functions (e.g. information structure) by means of different pitch accent types. Acoustically, pitch accent types differ in the alignment of pitch peaks (and valleys) in regard to stressed syllables, which makes the position of pitch peaks an unreliable cue to lexical stress (even though pitch peaks and lexical stress often coincide in intonation languages)...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Pitch Contour of an English Declarative Question Read Aloud by Chinese EFL Learners
The pitch contour of an English declarative question read aloud by 12 Chinese EFL learners is labeled and analyzed by means of the phonetic software “praat” on the basis of the English intonation grammar proposed by Pierrehumbert. The careful study yields to two findings. 1) Most Chinese EFL learners can locate correctly the stresses of the target sentence and attach legal tonal events to the p...
