Thermal lasers in urology
نویسندگان
چکیده
The thermal effect is the most common effect of tissue–laser interaction in urology. With the widespread use of endoscopic instruments laser applications in urology have dramatically increased. Various urological conditions can nowadays be successfully treated with lasers. In the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) and photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) have proven as reliable, safe and effective treatment alternatives. Urethral strictures, bladder neck sclerosis and ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction have also been treated successfully with lasers; however their role is limited to selected cases and conditions. For the treatment of malignant diseases, lasers can be applied in early stage upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma (UUTTCC) and penile carcinoma. This review summarizes the potential and limitations of thermal lasers in urology. & 2009 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Improving the Thermal Characteristics of Semiconductor Lasers Using a New Asymmetric Waveguide Structure
Self-heating leads to a temperature rise of the laser diode and limits the output power and efficiency due to increased loss and decreased differential gain. To control device self-heating, it is required to design the laser structure with a low optical loss, while the heat flux must spread out of the device efficiently. In this study, a new asymmetric waveguide design is proposed and th...
متن کاملTemperature Effect on THz Quantum Cascade Lasers
A simple semi-phenomenological model, which accurately predicts the dependence of thresholdcurrent for temperature of Resonant-phonon three well quantum cascade laser based on verticaltransitions is offered. We found that, the longitude optical phonon scattering of thermally excitedelectrons is the most important limiting factor for thermal performance of high frequency THz QCLs.In low frequenc...
متن کاملHEAT TREATMENT AND OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY OF CR4+:GGG FOR PASSIVELY Q-SWITCHING ND:GARNET LASERS
High quality GGG:Cr,Ca crystal for passive Q-switching Nd:garnet lasers has been grown by the Czochralski method. Thermal treatment of GGG crystals co-doped with Cr4+ and Ca2+ at different temperatures is investigated. The absorption spectra were resolved into different peaks, of modified Gaussian line-shape. Transition from octahedral sites to tetrahedral ones is thermally activated. An...

Background: Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) exhibit very unique physiochemical and optical properties, which now are extensively studied in a range of medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications. AuNPs can be used for cancer clinical treatment with minimal invasion. On the other hand, curcumin is a polyphenol derived from turmeric which is used for medical purposes due to its anti...
متن کاملThe role of lasers in modern urology
INTRODUCTION The functioning of modern urological departments and the high level of service they provide is possible through, among other things, the use of modern laser techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS Open operations have been replaced by minimally invasive procedures, and classical surgical tools by advanced lasers. The search for new applications with lasers began as technology developed....
