The Minimum Total Mass of MACHOs and Halo Models of the Galaxy

چکیده
If the density distribution ρ(r) of MACHOs is spherically symmetric with respect to the Galactic center, it is shown that the minimal total mass M min of the MACHOs is 1.7×10M⊙τ −6.7 where τ −6.7 is the optical depth (τ) toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the unit of 2×10−7. If ρ(r) is a decreasing function of r, it is proved that M min is 5.6× 10M⊙τ −6.7 . Several spherical and axially symmetric halo models of the Galaxy with a few free parameters are also considered. It is found that M min ranges from 5.6 × 10M⊙τ −6.7 to ∼ 3 × 10M⊙τ −6.7 . For general case, the minimal column density Σ min of MACHOs is obtained as Σ min = 25M⊙pcτ −6.7 . If the clump of MACHOs exist only halfway between LMC and the sun, M min is 1.5 × 10M⊙. This shows that the total mass of MACHOs is smaller than 5×10M⊙ , i.e. ∼ 10% of the mass of the halo inside LMC, either if the density distribution of MACHOs is unusual or τ ≪ 2× 10. Declining Rotation Curve and Brown Dwarf MACHOs
If the Galactic rotation speed at the Solar circle is ∼ 200 km s or smaller, which is supported by several recent studies, the rotation curve of the Galaxy could be declining in the outermost region. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of such declining rotation curve on the estimate of the MACHO mass and the fractional contribution of the MACHOs to the Galactic dark halo. Using Hernqu...
متن کاملGravitational microlensing and the galactic halo.
By means of extensive galactic modeling we study the implications of the more than eighty microlensing events that have now been observed for the composition of the dark halo of the Galaxy, as well as for other properties of the Galaxy. We take the Galaxy to be comprised of luminous and dark disk components, a bulge, and a dark halo consisting of both MACHOs and cold dark matter with each compo...
متن کاملThe MACHO Project First Year LMC Results : The Microlensing Rate
Since July 1992, the MACHO project has been carrying out long-term photometric monitoring of over 20 million stars in the Magellanic Clouds and Galactic Bulge. Our aim is to search for the very rare gravitational microlensing events predicted if the dark halo of our Galaxy is comprised of massive compact halo objects (hereafter Machos). We have now analysed most of the rst year's LMC data, comp...
متن کاملProbing the Mass Fraction of MACHOs in Extragalactic Halos
Current microlensing searches calibrate the mass fraction of the Milky Way halo which is in the form of Massive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs). We show that surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) can probe the same quantity in halos of distant galaxies. Microlensing of background quasars by MACHOs in intervening galaxies would distort the equivalent width distribution of the quasar emi...
متن کاملMagellanic Cloud Gravitational Microlensing Results: What Do They Mean?
Recent results from gravitational microlensing surveys of the Large Magellanic Cloud are reviewed. The combined microlensing optical depth of the MACHO and EROS-1 surveys is τLMC = 2.1 +1.3 −0.8 × 10 which is substantially larger than the background of τback ≤ 0.5 × 10 −7 from lensing by known stellar populations although it is below the expected microlensing optical depth of τ = 4.7 × 10 for a...
