چکیده

One of the most robust findings in the literature on hypnotic suggestibility is that there are large individual differences in the extent to which people respond to imaginative suggestions. Although approximately 15-20 percent of people respond to very few suggestions, a comparable percentage of individuals respond to an array of suggestions for changes in sensation, perception, cognition, and action (1). Many highly suggestible individuals are able to experience involuntary or automatic movements, vivid hallucinations, age regression, anaesthesias, compulsive posthypnotic behavior, and amnesia in response to suggestions. Observations of the dramatic effects of hypnosis led early investigators, including Charcot and Janet, to the mistaken conclusion that hypnosis was a pathological condition, while the therapeutic potential of hypnosis was recognized by Breuer, who used hypnosis to explore the psychological dynamics of conversion disorder (2). The idea that there is a link between hypnotic suggestibility and psychopathology (and medical conditions), and that suggestibility is associated with the ability to benefit from hypnotic procedures is very much alive today. In this article, we examine the link between hypnotic suggestibility and treatment outcome associated with a variety of Hypnotic Suggestibility, Psychopathology, and Treatment Outcome

Assessing hypnotic responsiveness in clinical and research settings.

The assessment of hypnotizability has been of longstanding interest to the hypnosis community. Since 1978, three special issues of hypnosis journals have been devoted to the topic of the assessment of hypnotic responsivity (Cohen, 1978-79; Orne, 1979, 1982). Not surprisingly, two of these issues have focused on assessment in the clinical context. Previous editors and guest editors of these spec...

To assess or not assess hypnotic suggestibility? That is the question.

To assess or not assess hypnotic suggestibility? That is the question. Dr. Howard Sutcher (2008) reports four cases in which the patients he treated profited from treatment yet " differed vastly in their levels of hypnotizability " (p. 61). He uses this observation to support his position that hypnotic suggestibility scores can tell us very little about treatment outcome. If Dr. Sutcher is corr...

Response expectancies, treatment credibility, and hypnotic suggestibility: mediator and moderator effects in hypnotic and cognitive-behavioral pain interventions.

BACKGROUND Several studies have shown that response expectancies are an important mechanism of popular psychological interventions for pain. However, there has been no research on whether response expectancies and treatment credibility independently mediate hypnotic and cognitive-behavioral pain interventions and whether the pattern of mediation is affected by experience with the interventions....

Dissociative tendencies and individual differences in high hypnotic suggestibility.

INTRODUCTION Inconsistencies in the relationship between dissociation and hypnosis may result from heterogeneity among highly suggestible individuals, in particular the existence of distinct highly suggestible subtypes that are of relevance to models of psychopathology and the consequences of trauma. This study contrasted highly suggestible subtypes high or low in dissociation on measures of hy...

Mediation and moderation of psychological pain treatments: response expectancies and hypnotic suggestibility.

The mediator role of response expectancies and the moderator role of hypnotic suggestibility were evaluated in the analogue treatment of pain. Approximately 1,000 participants were assessed for hypnotic suggestibility. Later, as part of a seemingly unrelated experiment, 188 of these individuals were randomly assigned to distraction, cognitive-behavioral package, hypnotic cognitive-behavioral pa...
