Insect Strategies of Visual Homing in Mobile Robots
نویسندگان
چکیده
Insects, such as desert ants, employ visual homing strategies for returning to important places in their environment. A model that reproduces aspects of the insects’ navigation behavior is the “snapshot model”. It is based on the assumption that insects store a visual snapshot of the surroundings at the target location, and derive a home direction from a comparison of the current image with this snapshot. In this study, the snapshot model was adapted for robot navigation, extended with image processing routines, and tested on the mobile robot Sahabot 2. The precision of the visual homing achieved in the robot experiments is comparable to that of desert ants. On one hand, the experimental results confirm that the snapshot model is an appropriate model of insect navigation even under real-world conditions. On the other hand, they demonstrate that the parsimonious navigation strategies used by insects might be used as a guideline for the design of algorithms for robot navigation.

Navigation Strategies referring to Insect Homing in Flying Robots
Sensor-based navigation is one of the most important researches for mobile robots domain and then there are many research works for sensor-based navigation. We propose the insects inspired landmark navigation to pinpoint the target position in this paper. There exit several research works such as snapshot model and average landmark model which request the absolute bearing information (compass) ...
متن کاملBiologically plausible visual homing methods based on optical flow techniques
Insects are able to return to important places in their environment by storing an image of the surround while at the goal, and later computing a home direction from a matching between this ‘snapshot’ image and the currently perceived image. Very similar ideas are pursued for the visual navigation of mobile robots. A wide range of different solutions for the matching between the two images have ...
متن کاملFlying Insects and Robots
Insects use memorised visual representations to find their way back to places of interest, like food sources and nests. They acquire these visual memories during systematic learning flights or walks on their first departure and update them whenever approaches to the goal have been difficult. The fact that small insects are so good at localisation tasks with apparent ease has attracted the atten...
متن کاملInsect-Inspired Visual Navigation for Flying Robots
This paper discusses the implementation of insect-inspired visual navigation strategies in flying robots, in particular focusing on the impact of changing height. We start by assessing the information available at different heights for visual homing in natural environments, comparing results from an open environment against one where trees and bushes are closer to the camera. We then test a rou...

Many animals, including insects, successfully engage in visual homing. We describe a system that allows a mobile robot to home. Specifically, we propose a simple, yet robust, homing scheme that only relies upon the observation of the bearings of visible landmarks. However, this can easily be extended to include other visual cues. The homing algorithm allows a mobile robot to home incrementally ...
