Combinatorics of random processes and sections of convex bodies

چکیده
We find a sharp combinatorial bound for the metric entropy of sets in R and general classes of functions. This solves two basic combinatorial conjectures on the empirical processes. 1. A class of functions satisfies the uniform Central Limit Theorem if the square root of its combinatorial dimension is integrable. 2. The uniform entropy is equivalent to the combinatorial dimension under minimal regularity. Our method also constructs a nicely bounded coordinate section of a symmetric convex body in R. In the operator theory, this essentially proves for all normed spaces the restricted invertibility principle of Bourgain and Tzafriri.

We compare the volumes of projections of convex bodies and the volumes of the projections of their sections, and, dually, those of sections of convex bodies and of sections of their circumscribed cylinders. For L ⊂ R a convex body, we take n random segments in L and consider their ‘Minkowski average’ D. For fixed n, the pth moments of V (D) (1 ≤ p < ∞) are minimized, for V (L) fixed, by the ell...

We study two properties of random high dimensional sections of convex bodies. In the first part of the paper we estimate the central section function |K ∩F⊥| n−k for random F ∈ Gn,k and K ⊂ R n a centrally symmetric isotropic convex body. This partially answers a question raised by V. Milman and A. Pajor (see [MP], p.88). In the second part we show that every symmetric convex body has random hi...

If two symmetric convex bodies K and L both have nicely bounded sections, then the intersection of random rotations of K and L is also nicely bounded. For L being a subspace, this main result immediately yields the unexpected “existence vs. prevalence” phenomenon: If K has one nicely bounded section, then most sections of K are nicely bounded. The main result represents a new connection between...

This is an informal discussion on one of the basic problems in the theory of empirical processes, addressed in our preprint ”Combinatorics of random processes and sections of convex bodies”, which is available at ArXiV and from our web pages. Arguably, the central problem of the theory of empirical processes is the following: Describe the classes of functions on which the classical limit theore...
متن کاملRandom Aspects of High-dimensional Convex Bodies
In this paper we study geometry of compact, not necessarily centrally symmetric, convex bodies in R. Over the years, local theory of Banach spaces developed many sophisticated methods to study centrally symmetric convex bodies; and already some time ago it became clear that many results, if valid for arbitrary convex bodies, may be of interest in other areas of mathematics. In recent years many...
