چکیده
The freshwater mud eel Monopterus cuchia is a tasteful, nutritionally rich and medicinally valuable fish with high export demands which can play a unique role for socio-economic welfare of the area. This fish was rich in nature of Bangladesh, however, the populations of the freshwater eel are declining at an alarming rate from the natural water bodies due to several reasons specially for overfishing while increasing the population of this fish completely depends on natural reproduction, and thus this fish are recorded as rare species in Bangladeshi habitats. Due to its high market demands and this fish is now a red listed species in Bangladesh, so, different steps should be taken for conserving this fish. As no positive responds of this fish with artificial breeding for seed production it is necessary to learn more about its life history in details. Therefore, this review was made considering its distribution, populations, taxonomy, habit and habitats, morphology, physiology, biology including reproduction strategies, genetics and molecular biology, biochemical compositions, toxicological observations, health concern, culture practice, capture fishery, consumable status in Bangladesh, marketing and business as well as socio-economic conditions of this freshwater mud eel in Bangladesh. This review is considered from the literature review of the PhD work of first author.

Vitamin D3-induced calcemic and phosphatemic responses in the freshwater mud eel Amphipnous cuchia maintained in different calcium environments.
Vitamin D3 (100 ng 100 g body weight-1 day-1) was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) to the freshwater mud eel Amphipnous cuchia kept in artificial freshwater, calcium-free freshwater, low-calcium freshwater (0.2 mmol/l CaCl2) or calcium-rich freshwater (13.4 mmol/l CaCl2) for 15 days. Analyses of serum calcium and phosphate levels were performed on days 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 after the beginnin...
متن کاملViral diseases of wild and farmed European eel Anguilla anguilla with particular reference to the Netherlands.
Diseases are an important cause of losses and decreased production rates in freshwater eel farming, and have been suggested to play a contributory role in the worldwide decline in wild freshwater eel stocks. Three commonly detected pathogenic viruses of European eel Anguilla anguilla are the aquabirnavirus eel virus European (EVE), the rhabdovirus eel virus European X (EVEX), and the alloherpes...
متن کاملImprovement in the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation in the freshwater eel acclimated to 10.1 MPa hydrostatic pressure.
Previous studies have suggested that the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation in the freshwater eel (Anguilla anguilla) is increased after acclimation to high hydrostatic pressure. Analysis at atmospheric pressure of the respiratory chain complexes showed that, after 21 days at 10.1 MPa, the activity of complex II was decreased to approximately 50 % (P<0.01) of the control value and that cyt...
متن کاملQualitative assessment of the diet of European eel larvae in the Sargasso Sea resolved by DNA barcoding.
European eels (Anguilla anguilla) undertake spawning migrations of more than 5000 km from continental Europe and North Africa to frontal zones in the Sargasso Sea. Subsequently, the larval offspring are advected by large-scale eastward ocean currents towards continental waters. However, the Sargasso Sea is oligotrophic, with generally low plankton biomass, and the feeding biology of eel larvae ...
متن کاملDetection of Japanese eel endothelial cells-infecting virus in Anguilla japonica elvers
Japanese eel endothelial cells-infecting virus (JEECV) has spread in eel farms and caused serious economic loss. In this study, we examined the prevalence of JEECV infection in 100 wild Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) elvers caught from Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan, using quantitative PCR and conventional PCR. Total genomic DNA was obtained from the cranial quarter of the body in 70 of 100 eels...
