Absolute timing of the Crab Pulsar at optical wavelengths with STJs

چکیده

Context. We have observed the Crab Pulsar in the optical with S-Cam, an instrument based on Superconducting Tunneling Junctions (STJs) with μs time resolution. Aims. Our aim was to study the delay between the radio and optical pulse. Methods. The Crab Pulsar was observed three times over a time span of almost 7 years, on two different locations, using three different versions of the instrument, and using two different GPS units. Results. We consistently find that the optical peak leads the radio peak by 49±90, 254±170, and 291±100 μs. On assumption of a constant optical lead, the weighted-average value is ∼170 μs, or when rejecting (based on a perhaps questionable radio ephemeris) the first measurement, 273±100 μs.

Simultaneous Absolute Timing of the Crab Pulsar at Radio and Optical Wavelengths

Context. The Crab pulsar emits across a large part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Determining the time delay between the emission at different wavelengths will allow to better constrain the site and mechanism of the emission. We have simultaneously observed the Crab Pulsar in the optical with S-Cam, an instrument based on Superconducting Tunneling Junctions (STJs) with μs time resolution and a...

Crab ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Optical STJ Observations of the Crab Pulsar

We report the first observations of an astronomical object using a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) device, a pixel detector with intrinsic energy resolution in the optical wavelength range. The Crab pulsar was observed using a 6 × 6 array of Tantalum STJs at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. Each array element provides photon counting capability recording up to ∼ 10 3 phot...

New optical polarization measurements of the Crab pulsar

The Crab nebula and its pulsar have been observed for about 3 hours with the high-speed photo-polarimeter OPTIMA in January 2002 at the Calar Alto 3.5 m telescope. The Crab pulsar intensity and polarization are determined at all phases of rotation with higher statistical accuracy than ever. Therefore, we were able to separate the so-called ’off-pulse’ phase emission (with an intensity of about ...

Optical polarisation of the Crab pulsar: precision measurements and comparison to the radio emission

The linear polarisation of the Crab pulsar and its close environment was derived from observations with the high-speed photo-polarimeter OPTIMA at the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope in the optical spectral range (400–750 nm). Time resolution as short as 11 μs, which corresponds to a phase interval of 1/3000 of the pulsar rotation, and high statistics allow the derivation of polarisation detail...
