چکیده

We investigated on the influence of a temporally dispersive Kerr effect on the modulation instability and the propagation of solitary wave pulse. The modulation instability gain is derived and compared with numerical calculations. The role of nonlinear response time on reshaping the solitary pulse is examined. 2008 Elsevier B.V. Temporal modulation instabilities of counterpropagating waves in a finite dispersive Kerr medium. I. Theoretical model and analysis

This paper presents a comprehensive analytical study of temporal modulation instabilities in a finite, nonlinear, dispersive medium in which two counterpropagating pump beams interact through a Kerr-type nonlinearity. The analysis includes selfand cross-phase modulations, group-velocity dispersion, four-wave mixing, and reflections occurring at the two facets of the dispersive Kerr medium. The ...

Break-up of two-dimensional bright spatial solitons due to transverse modulation instability

– We present the theory and the experimental observation of break-up of twodimensional bright spatial solitons propagating in a three-dimensional bulk photorefractive nonlinear medium due to transverse modulation instability. Solitary wave (self-bound) solutions of nonlinear propagation equations are a fascinating topic of nonlinear dynamics. The analysis of their stability and nonlinear evolut...

Induced modulation instability and recurrence in nonlocal nonlinear media

The long-term behaviour of spatial modulation instability in nonlocal nonlinear Kerr media is studied theoretically and numerically. Seeding the modulation instability with a periodic modulation leads to an energy transfer to higher-order modes and the long-term behaviour of the system shows the Fermi–Pasta–Ulam recurrence. For large spatial frequencies, close to the cut-off frequency, the stab...

Spatiotemporal instabilities in nonlinear bulk media with Bragg gratings

We study spatiotemporal instabilities in a bulk medium with Kerr-type nonlinearity and a volume Bragg grating along the direction of wave propagation. The continuous-wave beam propagation is unstable in such a periodic structure because of an interplay among grating-induced dispersion, diffraction, and nonlinear phase modulation. A linear stability analysis of the nonlinear coupled-mode equatio...

Modulational Instability in a Communication Link Exploiting a Negative Nonlinearity for Compensation of Self-phase Modulation

In optical communication systems, the technique of alternating dispersion is commonly used as a way to counteract the dispersive pulse broadening. The main limitations, in terms of bit-rate, then come from the fiber Kerr nonlinearity acting through self-phase modulation and four-wave mixing [1]. The recently introduced method of " dispersion management ", where the dispersion compensation is on...
