On the Use of the Flexible Fourier Form in Unit Roots Tests, Endogenous Breaks, and Parameter Instability

چکیده
The possibility that a series can contain an unknown number of smooth breaks raises two distinct problems. First, even if the breaks are sharp, the number of breaks and the break dates themselves are generally unknown and need to be estimated along with the other parameters of the model. Second, even if the number of breaks is known, the possibility of a smooth break means that the functional form of the break is unknown to the researcher. A misspecification of the functional form of the breaks may be as problematic as ignoring the breaks altogether. Moreover, ever if a series contains no breaks, it may be subject to other nonlinearities or parameter instabilities. We summarize a number of papers that use a variant of Gallant’s (1981) Flexible Fourier Form to control for the unknown number and form of the breaks. The paper details and illustrates several unit root tests, stationarity tests, and tests for parameter instability that are based on a Fourier approximation.

Which Countries are Catching up? New Evidences Using Flexible Fourier Stationary Test
In this paper, we tested the catching-up hypothesis toward the USA using Becker et al. (2006) flexible Fourier KPSS stationary test over the period 1960-2009. The mentioned test could control for unknown number and form of structural breaks using a selected frequency component of a Fourier function. Our results show almost poor countries stay poor and almost rich countries stay rich. South Kore...
متن کاملStructural Breaks and Time-varying Parameter: A Survey with Application Communications of the IBIMA
The theme of instability or breaks in macroeconomic series has attracted considerable attention over the last several decades. There are a large number of tests for structural changes or the stability of parameters. We focus the review of unit-root tests, unit-root tests including possible structural breaks, and time-varying parameter literature. Unit-root tests, which concentrate on the studyi...

This paper breaks new ground by modelling lot sizing and scheduling in a flexible flow line (FFL) simultaneously instead of separately. This problem, called the ‘General Lot sizing and Scheduling Problem in a Flexible Flow Line’ (GLSP-FFL), optimizes the lot sizing and scheduling of multiple products at multiple stages, each stage having multiple machines in parallel. The objective is to satisf...
متن کاملInstability of the Determinants of Birth Intervals in Ahvaz-Iran: A Structural Change Modelling Approach
Birth interval is one of the major determinants of the fertility rate. In this paper structural change approach is used to study the instabilities in the effects of different socio-economic factors on birth intervals of children with respect to couple's years of marriage factor in Ahvaz-Iran. A class of M-fluctuation tests for parameter instability is used and based on these tests different evi...
متن کاملA New Nonlinear Specification of Structural Breaks for Money Demand in Iran
In a structural time series regression model, binary variables have been used to quantify qualitative or categorical quantitative events such as politic and economic structural breaks, regions, age groups and etc. The use of the binary dummy variables is not reasonable because the effect of an event decreases (increases) gradually over time not at once. The simple and basic idea in this paper i...
