چکیده

The vigor of religious feelings, and the fact that most, if not all, cultures include a system of spiritual belief, suggest that humans have an innate predisposition towards religiousness. There are several possible adaptive advantages that may help explain such a disposition; religions promote cooperative relations, they induce people to obeysensible rules, and they soothe the minds of their followers. These advantages could very well have directed evolution towards the design of a spiritually inclined brain. Accepting that God is inside our heads, the important question is not if he exists, but rather: What can he do for us? As a rule of thumb humans are advised to conform to their inborn tendencies, implying that we ought to believe in spirits. Religiousness offers both direct rewards, for example the joy associated with communicating with a god, as well as indirect benefits such as those suggested above. O u g h t G o d to W o r r y ? So is G o d with us after al l? There may be a compos i te answer. Yes, G o d exists. Elvis’ Gospel Music: Between the Secular and the Spiritual?

Do fans sanctify their heroes? In the past, I have argued that Elvis fandom is not a neo-religious practice but that attention to a modified version of Durkheim’s theory of religion can, nevertheless, help to explain it as a form of social interaction. I take that argument further here, first by revealing the ethical and analytical advantages of neo-Durkheimian theory, then by pitting this theo...

Cui bono? A review of breaking the spell: religion as a natural phenomenon by Daniel C. Dennett.

The three requirements for a Darwinian evolutionary process are replication, variation and selection. Dennett (2006) discusses various theories of how these three processes, especially selection, may have operated in the evolution of religion. He believes that the origins of religion, like the origins of language and music, may be approached scientifically. He hopes that such investigations wil...

Mani’s Living Gospel: A New Approach to the Arabic and Classical New Persian Testimonia

In order to reconstruct the contents of the most famous work of Mani, Living Gospel (written originally in Syriac), we have to use the Arabic and Classical New Persian texts containing accounts and even indirect quotations of this book. One of the most remarkable points in these accounts is that they clearly show that an important part of the Living Gospel contains the Manicha...

The Problem of Evil in the Thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Throughout all of Rousseau’s works there is tension between reason and conscience. Reason binds men when they think correctly, but divides them when they place it at the service of self-interest. Conversely, the universality of conscience is immediate and transparent: it transmits the truth of the existence of God and of the universal principles that underlie human action, despite the differenc...

The History of the Idea of a Literal Connection between the Words “Ahmad” and “Paraclete” in the Qur’an and the Gospel of John

In recent years, some people, comparing the word “Ahmad” in a Quranic verse speaking of Jesus’ prophecy about Prophet Muhammad (Qur'an 61:6) with the word “Paraclete” in the Gospel of John (14:26, etc.), have tried to make a connection between them. They have ascribed to Muslims (and even to the Prophet himself) the idea that the word “Paraclete” is a distorted form of the word “periclete</...
