knowledge of gene regulation, particularly in neoplastic cells, this deficit is striking. With our current understanding of chromosomal translocations, point mutations, and gene amplification in tumor cells, it is surprising to read that there is ". . . no difference between cancer and normal DNA . . ." (p. 130). The author spends a fair amount of time discussing possible mechanisms for the carcinogenicity of phorbol esters without discussing the currently held belief of the importance of protein kinase C in the pathway. Other areas, such as the processing of mRNA, similarly get inadequate treatment. For all of this, the book is not without merit. Most of the omissions can be ascribed to a delay in publishing after completion of the manuscript. In consequence, one unfamiliar with the field might get a skewed impression of current knowledge. A worker in the area of gene regulation, however, who can place this book in a proper perspective can find much to gain. The basic premise of the author is that agents which are carcinogenic and those that induce differentiation in in vitro systems, do so, either directly or indirectly, by altering the physiochemical structure of DNA. Specifically, they induce strand separation leading to subsequent DNA or RNA synthesis, respectively. Furthermore, DNA from neoplastic cells differs from normal DNA in susceptibility to some of these changes. A number of weaknesses are present in this thesis; however, the real strength of the book lies in the large number of systems cited in defending the author's case. Of particular interest was the reference to tumors in plants-an area with which most tumor biologists are unfamiliar. The induction of plant tumors by the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens was of special import (tumor virologists take note!). As this volume is not encyclopedic, and at points strikingly out of date, a reader outside of the field might be misled by the presentation. Despite the book's weaknesses, a tumor biologist will still find much of merit.

An Unusual Presentation of Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis

The granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly known as Wegener’s granulomatosis, is a pauci-immune vasculitis involving small- and medium-sized blood vessels. Classically, the patients inflicted with this disease present with a triad of necrotizing granulomatous inflammation of the respiratory tract, cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis, and glomerulonephritis (GN). The antinuclear (ANA) and...

Antinuclear antibodies in psychiatric illness: their relationship to diagnosis and drug treatment.

Antinuclear antibodies occurred more often and in higher titres in psychiatric patients than in controls. Anti-DNA antibodies were not found. We suggest that antinuclear antibodies may be drug-induced and that lithium carbonate may have a particular tendency to produce this reaction.

False-positive anti-Toxoplasma fluorescent-antibody tests in patients with antinuclear antibodies.

The indirect fluorescent-antibody (IFA) method for diagnosis of toxoplasmosis is widely used and is considered to be as specific as the Sabin-Feldman dye test. After observing a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who had a positive toxoplasma IFA test but a negative dye test, we studied sera with high titers of antinuclear antibodies from 16 SLE patients and from 2 with rheumatoid ...

Serum Antinuclear Antibodies as Indicator of Relapse in Patients with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are antibodies that bind to several nuclear antigens. ANA have been reported in cancers, suggesting that they may have a role in the pathogenesis of malignancy [4,5]. Many studies have reported that NHL patients could display ANA antibodies [6,7]. This study assessed serum levels of ANA in NHL patients and examined its association with hematological, clinicopatholog...

Antinuclear antibodies and elevated anti-Epstein-Barr virus titers in cancer patients.

One and one-half percent of human sera from patients seen at a clinic for treatment of cancer contained antibodies to the nuclei of chick kidney cells by indirect immunofluorescence tests. In the group of sera containing antinuclear antibodies, the geometric mean titer to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) capsid antigen was significantly elevated. Sera obtained from normal adults or from patients with s...

Antinuclear Antibodies in Rabbit Antisera

Antinuclear antibodies were detected by immunofluorescence in most sera from rabbits immunized with whole human serum emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. Four of 14 sera from rabbits immunized with Cohn fractions III, IV-1, or IV-4 also gave positive nuclear fluorescence with human leukocyte nuclei. Other human and animal nuclei gave negative results with these rabbit antisera. Three rabb...
