A Comparison of Three Elliptical Galaxy Photo-chemical Evolution Codes

چکیده

Working within the classic supernovae-driven wind framework for elliptical galaxy evolution, we perform a systematic investigation into the discrepancies between the predictions of three contemporary codes – Arimoto & Yoshii (1987, A&A, 173, 23), Bressan et al. (1994, ApJS, 94, 63), and Gibson (1996a, MNRAS, 278, 829; 1996b, MNRAS, submitted). By being primarily concerned with reproducing the present-day colour-metallicity-luminosity (CML) relations amongst ellipticals, the approaches taken in the theoretical modelling have managed to obscure many of the hidden differences between the codes. Targeting the timescale for the onset of the initial galactic wind tGW as a primary “difference” indicator, we demonstrate exactly how and why each code is able to claim successful reproduction of the CML relations, despite possessing apparently incompatible input ingredients. Subject headings: galaxies: abundances — galaxies: elliptical and lenticular, cD — galaxies: evolution — methods: miscellaneous

The Case against Bimodal Star Formation in Elliptical Galaxies

We consider the present-day photometric and chemical properties of elliptical galaxies, adopting the bimodal star formation scenario of Elbaz, Arnaud & Vangioni-Flam (1995). These models utilise an initial mass function (IMF) biased heavily toward massive stars during the early phases of galactic evolution, leading to early Type II supernovae-driven galactic winds. A subsequent lengthy, milder,...

Formation of metal-poor gaseous halo in gas-rich galaxy mergers

We numerically investigate chemodynamical evolution of interstellar medium (ISM) in gas-rich disk-disk galaxy mergers in order to explore the origin of fundamental chemical properties of halo ISM observed in elliptical galaxies. Main results obtained in this chemodynamical study are the following three. (1) Elliptical galaxies formed by gas-rich mergers show steep negative metallicity gradients...

In this series of lectures I discuss the basic principles and the modelling of the chemical evolution of galaxies. In particular, I present models for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way galaxy and compare them with the available observational data. From this comparison one can infer important constraints on the mechanism of formation of the Milky Way as well as on stellar nucleosynthesis a...

The Chemo-Dynami al Evolution of Ellipti al Galaxies: Pre-heating and AGN heating

We study the chemodynamical evolution of elliptical galaxies and their X-ray and optical properties using high-resolution cosmological simulations. Our Tree N-body/SPH code includes a self-consistent treatment of radiative cooling, star formation, supernovae feedback, and chemical enrichment. We present a series of ΛCDM cosmological simulations which trace the spatial and temporal evolution of ...

Dynamical Models of Elliptical Galaxies in Z = 0.5 Clusters: I. Data-model Comparison and Evolution of Galaxy Rotation

We present spatially resolved stellar rotation velocity and velocity dispersion profiles form Keck/LRIS absorption-line spectra for 25 galaxies, mostly visually classified ellipticals, in three clusters at z ≈ 0.5. We interpret the kinematical data and HST photometry using oblate axisymmetric two-integral f(E,Lz) dynamical models based on the Jeans equations. This yields good fits, provided tha...
