چکیده

Prompted by the discovery of the accreted Canis Major dwarf galaxy and its associated globular cluster (GC) system (Martin et al.), we investigate the contribution of accreted GCs to the Galactic system. The Canis Major GCs, and those associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, exhibit a range of galactocentric radii, prograde and retro-grade motions, and horizontal branch morphologies, indicating that such properties are of limited use in identifying accreted GCs. By contrast, we find that the age-metallicity relation (AMR) of these dwarf galaxies is distinct from that of the main Galactic GC distribution at intermediate-to-high metallicities ([Fe/H] −1.3). The accretion of GCs with a distinct AMR would explain much of the apparent age spread in the Galactic GC system. The Canis Major and Sagittarius AMRs are similar to those of other Local Group dwarf galaxies and are consistent with a simple closed-box chemical enrichment model – a further indication that these GCs formed outside of the Milky Way. The Canis Major GCs all have smaller-than-average sizes for their galactocentric distances, lending further support to their origin outside of the Milky Way. Our findings suggest that accretion of similar mass dwarfs does not appear to have played a major role in building the stellar mass of the thick disk or bulge of the Milky Way.

The Luminosity Distribution of Globular Clusters in Dwarf Galaxies

The majority of the globular clusters associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy are faint. In this respect it differs significantly from the globular cluster systems surrounding typical giant galaxies. The observation that most of globular clusters in the outer halo of the Galaxy are also sub-luminous may be understood by assuming that these clusters once also belonged to faint clusterrich d...

A dwarf galaxy remnant in Canis Major: the fossil of an in-plane accretion onto the Milky Way

We present an analysis of the asymmetries in the population of Galactic M-giant stars present in the 2MASS All Sky catalogue. Several large-scale asymmetries are detected, the most significant of which is a strong elliptical-shaped stellar over-density, close to the Galactic plane at (l = 240◦, b = −8◦), in the constellation of Canis Major. A small grouping of globular clusters (NGC 1851, NGC 1...

Centauri and G 1 like massive globular clusters the remnant cores of infalling dwarf galaxies ? – Dynamical constraints

We simulate the result of orbital decay for a dwarf satellite galaxy in a disk galaxy potential. The peeling-off of the satellite by the strong tidal field within the disk of the host galaxy quickly reduces the satellite’s mass, and drasticly slows down the decaying of the orbit. The result is generally a cluster on a large halo orbit, like the M54 cluster of the Sagittarius galaxy in the Milky...

The Globular Cluster Ngc 5286. I. a New Ccd Bv Color-magnitude Diagram *

We present BV photometry of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5286, based on 128 V frames and 133 B frames, and covering the entire face of the cluster. Our photometry reaches almost two magnitudes below the turn-off level, and is accordingly suitable for an age analysis. Field stars were removed statistically from the cluster’s color-magnitude diagram (CMD), and a differential reddening correc...

Comparing the properties of local globular cluster systems: implications for the formation of the Galactic halo

We investigate the hypothesis that some fraction of the globular clusters presently observed in the Galactic halo formed in external dwarf galaxies. This is done by means of a detailed comparison between the “old halo”, “young halo,” and “bulge/disk” sub-systems defined by Zinn (1993a) and the globular clusters in the LMC, SMC, and Fornax and Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We first use ...
