Competition between tree seedlings and herbaceous vegetation] support for a theory of resource supply and demand

چکیده

0 We measured competition intensity "CI# between herbaceous vegetation and tree seedlings "Quercus macrocarpa and Q[ ellipsoidalis# along an experimental moistureÐ light gradient[ Contrasting theories were tested by comparing variation in competition intensity to changes in neighbour biomass and resource supply and demand[ 1 CI based on survival was inversely correlated with net soil water supply "gross supply minus demand by herbaceous vegetation#[ CI was not positively correlated with either gross resource supply or neighbour biomass\ contrary to predictions of Grime|s triangular model for plant strategies[ 2 Many of the inconsistencies and con~icting results that have characterized the recent literature on plant competition could be eliminated if changes in competition intensity along a resource gradient are compared with changes in net resource supply rather than changes in productivity or neighbour biomass[ 3 Tree seedling success in savannas and grasslands may be strongly in~uenced by the intensity of competition from herbaceous vegetation[ Factors that reduce soil water content are likely to increase competition intensity "and reduce seedling success# in these environments\ while factors that increase soil water content will favour seedling success through decreased competition for water with herbaceous vegetation[

Is oak establishment in old-fields and savanna openings context dependent?

1 Multiple factors are known to influence tree seedling establishment, yet the degree to which these factors depend on each other and on spatial context is largely unknown. We examined the influence of herbaceous competition and water and nitrogen limitations on tree seedling establishment as functions of distance from trees (within-site spatial context) and site history (between-site spatial c...

Water and nutrients alter herbaceous competitive effects on tree seedlings in a semi-arid savanna

1. Globally, both climatic patterns and nitrogen deposition rates show directional changes over time. It is uncertain how woody seedlings, which coexist with herbaceous plants in savannas, respond to concurrent changes in water and nutrient availability. 2. We investigated competition effects between herbaceous vegetation and tree seedlings ( Colophospermum mopane ) under changed water and nutr...

Changes in light and nitrogen availability under pioneer trees may indirectly facilitate tree invasions of grasslands

1 The first trees establishing in grasslands may indirectly favour their seedlings in competition with neighbouring herbaceous vegetation by increasing soil fertility with nitrogen-rich litter and by reducing light levels under their canopies. It is predicted that increasing soil nitrogen availability will accelerate invasion of trees by stimulating their growth more than that of herbaceous spe...

Robust supply chain coordination modeling: A revenue management perspective

The revenue management concept and techniques are applied to model the coordination of supply chain elements. The fundamental premise of this approach is synchronization of a group of business entities consist-ing of a manufacturer and multiple suppliers to achieve an optimal supply chain capacity plans. The output of the supply chain can be various products and thus it is measured in terms of ...

A model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework

Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...
