US guidelines on neuroimaging in patients with non-acute headache: a commentary.

چکیده

The US Headache Consortium is a group of 14 US doctors (mainly academic neurologists) who aim to “develop scientifically sound, clinically relevant practice guidelines on chronic headache in the primary care setting”. The consortium has produced several sets of guidelines, endorsed by the American Academy of Neurology and several other relevant US medical academic societies. These include the guidelines on neuroimaging of non-acute headache patients. As far as I am aware, these are the only available guidelines addressing this issue. Nonacute (or chronic) headache is defined as all headache syndromes lasting for at least four weeks, and the “primary care setting” in the USA refers to patients seen in an outpatient setting by a family doctor, a general physician or a specialist.

Neuroimaging in headache: Lessons not learned.

In the 1980s as health care costs were burgeoning at remarkable speed, Dr David Eddy, an MD, PhD, bioengineer, and health care economist, was the first to apply Marcov models to clinical medicine, as well as the first to use and popularize the term ‘‘evidencebased medicine.’’ He wrote monthly articles in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (1) addressing inconsistency in medi...

Neurophysiological tests and neuroimaging procedures in non-acute headache (2nd edition).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A large number of instrumental investigations are used in patients with non-acute headache in both research and clinical fields. Although the literature has shown that most of these tools contributed greatly to increasing understanding of the pathogenesis of primary headache, they are of little or no value in the clinical setting. METHODS This paper provides an update o...

Abstract Background and purpose: The deep cervical flexor muscles have a major role in neck stabilization and evidence suggests that these muscles especially longus colli muscle (LCM) becomes dysfunctional in panitents suffering from cervicogenic headache. Therefore, measurement of these muscles in healthy subjects and patients may be of great value to understand the stabilization function o...
