Eventualities in Time

چکیده

This paper addresses the general question of how eventualities should be localized in time. The more speciic question about the localization of states and events is discussed, too. For these questions the theory of tense and aspect in Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) is closely investigated, as far as relevant for single-sentence-discourses. The answers given here are mainly inspired by DRT as presented in KR93]. We show that the way eventualities are localized in time in that book contains some inconsistencies. In particular there is a mathematical problem concerning the localization function and a linguistic problem concerning the basic aspectual schema with culmination point. We propose a remedy for these problems. As main results we propose a change in the theory of aspect and a new deenition of an eventuality structure. The general picture that emerges should be interesting not only for DRT but for other theories using an eventuality-based semantics as well.

A Partitioning Algorithm for Detecting Eventuality Coincidence in Temporal Double recurrence

A logical theory of regular double or multiple recurrence of eventualities, which are regular patterns of occurrences that are repeated, in time, has been developed within the context of temporal reasoning that enabled reasoning about the problem of coincidence. i.e. if two complex eventualities, or eventuality sequences consisting respectively of component eventualities x0, x1,....,xr and y0, ...

The problem of coincidence in a theory of temporal multiple recurrence

Logical theories have been developed which have allowed temporal reasoning about eventualities (a la Galton) such as states, processes, actions, events, processes and complex eventualities such as sequences and recurrences of other eventualities. This paper presents the problem of coincidence within the framework of a first order logical theory formalizing temporal multiple recurrence of two se...

Incremental Decision Procedures for Modal Logic with Nominals and Eventualities

This thesis contributes to the study of incremental decision procedures for modal logics with nominals and eventualities. Eventualities are constructs that allow to reason about the reflexive-transitive closure of relations. Eventualities are an essential feature of temporal logics and propositional dynamic logic (PDL). Nominals extend modal logics with the possibility to reason about state equ...

Quantifying Over Eventualities in Continuation Semantics

The paper explores the possibilities of representing the semantics of eventualities in continuation semantics framework. It focuses on providing an analysis for quantification over eventualities and for anaphora to eventualities. We give specific lexical entries for the adverbial quantifiers always and never and for a silent adverbial quantifier we consider responsible for the meaning of expres...

Almost-certain eventualities and abstract probabilities in quantitative temporal logic

‘Almost-certain eventualities’ are liveness properties that hold with probability 1. ‘Abstract probabilities’ are probabilities in transition systems about which we know only that they are neither 0 nor 1. Vardi [16] showed that almost-certain properties in linear temporal logic depend only on abstract probabilities, rather than on the probabilities’ precise values; we discuss the extent to whi...
