Inducing lexical entries for an incremental semantic grammar

چکیده
We introduce a method for data-driven learning of lexical entries in an inherently incremental semantic grammar formalism, Dynamic Syntax (DS). Lexical actions in DS are constrained procedures for the incremental projection of compositional semantic structure. Here, we show how these can be induced directly from sentences paired with their complete propositional semantic structures. Checking induced entries over an artificial dataset generated using a known grammar demonstrates that the method learns lexical entries compatible with those defined by linguists, with different versions of the DS framework induced by varying only general tree manipulation rules. This is achieved without requiring annotation at the level of individual words, via a method compatible with work on linguistic change and routinisation.

Probabilistic induction for an incremental semantic grammar
We describe a method for learning an incremental semantic grammar from a corpus in which sentences are paired with logical forms as predicate-argument structure trees. Working in the framework of Dynamic Syntax, and assuming a set of generally available compositional mechanisms, we show how lexical entries can be learned as probabilistic procedures for the incremental projection of semantic str...

متن کاملData-Driven Learning in an Incremental Grammar Framework
Overview Incremental processing of both syntax and semantics, both in parsing and generation, is of significant interest for modelling the human language capability, and for building systems which interact with it. Formal linguistics has made significant contributions to this; one example is the framework Dynamic Syntax, which provides an inherently word-by-word incremental grammatical framewor...
متن کاملLexicalized grammar and the description of motion events
In natural language generation, the use of a lexicalized grammar formalism and incremental syntactic and semantic processing places strong and specific constraints on the form and meaning of grammatical entries. These principles restrict which grammatical representations are possible and suggest examples an analyst can consult to decide among possibilities. We discuss and justify a number of su...
متن کاملThe two be's of English
This qualitative study investigates the uses of be in Contemporary English. Based on this study, one easy claim and one more difficult claim are proposed. The easy claim is that the traditional distinction between be as a lexical verb and be as an auxiliary is faulty. In particular, 'copular-be', traditionally considered to be a lexical verb, is in fact a prototypi...
