Evidence for Phonological Grammar in Speech Perception

چکیده
This paper presents evidence from two experiments 1. that speakers of English use the phonotactics of English in analyzing speech input, and 2. that their phonotactic knowledge takes the form of categorical constraints stated in terms of phonological categories. Experimental results indicate that the phonotactic effect on ambiguous-segment perception is influenced by the relative markedness of the endpoints, but not by their relative frequency. 1. PHONOTACTICS INFLUENCES PERCEPTION: THE MASSARO-COHEN EFFECT Massaro & Cohen [1] synthesized segments ambiguous between [r] and [l] by varying F3, and asked English speakers to judge them in the following syllabic contexts: Context English phonotactics allows

Perceptual learning in speech is phonetic, not phonological: Evidence from final consonant devoicing
Listeners flexibly recalibrate the perceptual categorization of sounds in response to speakers’ unusual pronunciation variants. Recent studies have shown that generalization of this recalibration can inform us about the nature of prelexical units used for speech perception. The present study tested whether this generalization is sensitive to phonetic or phonological properties of speech. Using ...

Phonological grammars characterize distinctions between relatively well-formed (unmarked) and relatively ill-formed (marked) phonological structures. We review evidence that markedness influences speech error probabilities. Specifically, although errors result in both unmarked as well as marked structures, there is a markedness asymmetry: errors are more likely to produce unmarked outcomes. We ...
متن کاملEffects of grammar facilitation on the phonological performance of children with speech and language impairments.
Although there is a great deal of evidence for a significant developmental relationship between grammar and phonology, the nature of this relationship and its implications for the intervention of children with impairments in both grammar and phonology are unclear. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether two approaches to grammar facilitation that placed no emphasis on phonolo...

متن کاملPhonological acquisition: recent attainments and new challenges.
Infants' phonological acquisition during the first 18 months of life has been some 30 years. Current research themes include statistical learning mechanisms, early lexical development, and models of phonetic category perception. So far, linguistic theories have hardly been taken into account. These theories are based upon the assumption that there is a common core of innate phonological knowled...
