Effects of Surface Irregularities on Piston Ring- Cylinder Tribo Pair of a Two Stroke Motor Engine in Hydrodynamic Lubrication

چکیده
Tribological parameters such as friction, lubrication and wear influence strongly the engine component's life. In this study, a piston ring-cylinder system simulated taking into account the surface modifications under fully flooded lubrication and normal engine conditions. The hydrodynamic pressure field solved based on the Navier Stokes equations by Fluid Structure Interaction analysis. A real experimental data of piston ringcylinder was used from a two stroke motor engine 50 cc. The surface irregularities are measured by 3D coordinate measurement machine while the engine has been worked about 4000 hours. The friction force, the hydrodynamic pressure, the oil film and the mechanical stresses were predicted for different engine conditions. Results show that the worn profile ring reduces the friction as well as the mechanical stresses increased. Surface condition of worn top ring was observed after a metallurgical profile analysis. © 2015 Published by Faculty of Engineering Corresponding author: Pantelis Nikolakopoulos University of Patras, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics, Machine Design Laboratory, Greece E-mail: [email protected]

Influence of sliding surface roughness and oil temperature on piston ring pack operation of an automotive IC engine
In the paper a comprehensive model of a piston ring pack motion on an oil film has been presented. The local oil film thickness can be compared to height of the combined roughness of sliding surfaces of piston rings and cylinder liner. Equations describing the mixed lubrication problem based on the empirical mathematical model formulated in works of Patir, Cheng and Greenwood, Tripp have been c...
متن کاملAn Improved Lubrication Model between Piston Rings and Cylinder Liners with Consideration of Liner Dynamic Deformations
The friction pair of piston rings and cylinder liner is one of the most important friction couplings in an internal combustion engine. It influences engine efficiency and service life. Under the excitation of piston slaps, the dynamic deformation of cylinder liner is close to the surface roughness magnitudes, which can affect the friction and lubrication performance between the piston rings and...

As worldwide automotive ownership is set to exceed 2 billion vehicles by 2030 [1], environmental and economical pressures on the automotive industry mean there is a trend to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions whilst simultaneously improving fuel economy. The use of electrical hybrid, start-stop idling and materials light-weighting are some of the technological solutions which can offer eff...
متن کاملInvestigating the effect of nanocoating on friction loss and abrasion in the piston rings
The piston ring which prepares mechanical sealing of a combustion chamber, should have significant abrasion resistance and less friction loss, using appropriate ring coating. The coating widely used is CrN, because of its good abrasion resistance at room temperature. However, it suffers from some shortcomings, such as high abrasion rate at temperatures above 200°C and lack of self-lubricating p...

The widespread use of biodiesel in internal combustion engines promotes frequent lubricant drain intervals which in turn affects lubricant sustainability and engine performance. In this research two endurance tests were carried out to evaluate the novel approach of strong base oil filter with palm biodiesel (PME) fueled single-cylinder diesel engine. The effects of strong base filter on lubrica...
