چکیده

There are a number of pieces of core infrastructure that are missing if we want to build intelligent narrative systems. One is the relative lack of availability of intelligent bodies that support wide behavioral repertoires and dynamic worlds. In this paper, I describe Twig, a simple physics and motion control system optimized for believable agents. Twig is open-source, reasonably fast, and runs under XNA Game Studio 3.0, making the importation of sets, props, and so on (comparatively) easy. It is being used for a semiregular “webcomic”.

Believable and Effective AI Agents in Virtual Worlds: Current State and Future Perspectives

The rapid development of complex virtual worlds (most notably, in 3D computer and video games) introduces new challenges for the creation of virtual agents, controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Two important subproblems in this topic area which need to be addressed are (a) believability and (b) effectiveness of agents’ behavior, i.e. human-likeness of the characters and high abil...

Towards Integrating Plot and Character for Interactive Drama

Interactive drama concerns itself with building dramatically interesting virtual worlds inhabited by computer-controlled characters, within which the user (hereafter referred to as the player) experiences a story from a first person perspective (Bates 1992). Over the past decade there has been a fair amount of research into believable agents, that is, autonomous characters exhibiting rich perso...

Believable Agents and Intelligent Story Adaptation for Interactive Storytelling

Interactive Narrative is an approach to interactive entertainment that enables the player to make decisions that directly affect the direction and/or outcome of the narrative experience being delivered by the computer system. Interactive narrative requires two seemingly conflicting requirements: coherent narrative and user agency. We present an interactive narrative system that uses a combinati...

Developing Pathematic Agents

Assuming that personality is the regular and consistent expression of emotions, theories of emotions can be used to provide synthetic actors with personality, therefore achieving higher levels of believability. Supported by this assumption, we developed a methodology based on the connguration of synthetic actors elements , which structure is based on Ortony, Clore, and Collins theory of emotion...

Robot Architectures for Believable Game Agents

Computer game character design and robotics share many of the same goals and computational constraints. Both attempt to create intelligent artifacts that respond realistically to their environments, in real time, using limited computation resources. Unfortunately, none of the current AI architectures is entirely satisfactory for either field. We discuss some of the issues in believability and c...
