چکیده

Classical foundations of expected utility were provided by Ramsey, de Finetti, von Neumann and Morgenstern, Anscombe and Aumann, and others. These foundations describe preference conditions to capture the empirical content of expected utility. The assumed preference conditions, however, vary among the models and a unifying idea is not readily transparent. Providing such a unifying idea is the purpose of this paper. The mentioned derivations have in common that a cardinal utility index for outcomes, independent of the states and probabilities, can be derived. Characterizing that feature provides the unifying idea of the mentioned models. q 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved. JEL classification: D81; C60

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility

Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...

A Single-Stage Approach to Anscombe and Aumann's Expected Utility*

Anscombe and Aumann showed that if one accepts the existence of a physical randomizing device such as a roulette wheel then Savage's derivation of subjective expected utility can be considerably simplified. They, however, invoked compound gambles to define their axioms. We demonstrate that the subjective expected utility derivation can be further simplified and need not invoke compound gambles....

Derivation of a Cardinal Utility Through a Weak Trade-off Consistency Requirement

An axiomatic model is presented, in which a utility function over consequences, unique up to location and unit, is derived. The axioms apply to a binary relation over purely subjective acts, namely no exogenous probabilities are assumed. The main axiom used is a weak tradeoff consistency condition. The model generalizes the biseparable model of Ghirardato and Marinacci (2001).

Rational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration

Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

19 Expected Utility as a Tool in Non - Cooperative Game Theory

This sequel to previous chapters on objective and subjective expected utility reviews conditions for players in a non-cooperative game to be Bayesian rational — i.e., to choose a strategy maximizing the expectation of each von Neumann–Morgenstern utility function in a unique cardinal equivalence class. In classical Nash equilibrium theory, players’ mixed strategies involve objective probabiliti...
