Postural Perturbations. Toxic or Helpful for Brain?
نویسنده
چکیده
Postural perturbations are usually used in rehabilitation centers to increase the stability of patients with different physical, mental or social disorders. Placing the subjects in frightening conditions is one of the most common conditional used in clinics and research studies aiming to influence the spinal reflexes of the subjects. The Hoffmann (H) reflex is also a very well-known reflex in this area to be studied. The present study focused on measurement of this reflex’s parameters in a group of young girls. Sixteen young girls with the anxiety scores less than 42 were recruited in this study and were tested in two different conditions including the standard prone lying position and standing on the edge of a one-meter height stool to see if this frightening conditions changes the spinal reflex’s parameters? The results of this study showed significant difference between the positions only in terms of the intensity needed to record the H-reflex (p=0.034). The results of this study confirmed that any postural perturbations will result in deleterious brain activities and might be considered as to be toxic for brain. The findings might help clinicians in a better understanding of the stability in people suffering from anxiety, fear of falling, elderly persons and also patients with psychological disorders.

Cortical Activity During Postural Recovery in Response to Predictable and Unpredictable Perturbations in Healthy Young and Older Adults: A Quantitative EEG Assessment
Introduction: To investigate the effects of predictable and unpredictable external perturbations on cortical activity in healthy young and older adults. Methods: Twenty healthy older and 19 healthy young adults were exposed to predictable and unpredictable external perturbations, and their cortical activity upon postural recovery was measured using a 32-channel quantitative encephalography. Th...

Background and Objective: Aging has been associated with deterioration in postural control, which manifests itself by an increase in postural sway. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between postural sway parameters and used balance recovery strategies in older people in response to sudden perturbations. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, 30 elderly men parti...
متن کاملModulation of cortical activity in response to visually induced postural perturbation: combined VR and EEG study.
There is evidence from EEG studies that unexpected perturbations to standing posture induce a differential modulation of cortical activity compared to self-initiated and/or predictable conditions. However, the neural correlates of whole body postural response to visually induced perturbations on standing posture have not been examined. Here we employ a novel experimental paradigm via combined v...
متن کاملMonosynaptic Stretch Reflex Fails to Explain the Initial Postural Response to Sudden Lateral Perturbations
Postural reflexes are essential for locomotion and postural stability, and may play an important role in the etiology of chronic back pain. It has recently been theoretically predicted, and with the help of unilateral perturbations of the trunk experimentally confirmed that the sensorimotor control must lower the reflex amplitude for increasing reflex delays to maintain spinal stability. The un...
