Non-destructive Assessment of Wood Decay and Termite Attack in Southern Pine Sapwood

چکیده
Field methods for evaluating wood decay and termite attack lack a means for quantitative measurement of weight loss or residual strength. Quantitative relationships between speed of impact-induced waves travelling parallel to the grain and residual compressive strength have been demonstrated in softwood attacked by brown-rot fungi, but such quantitative relationships have not been developed between wave speed and termite attack. We tested Southern Pine sapwood stakes that were vertically inserted half their length in soil in a Southern Pine forest in southern Mississippi. Results showed that measurement of both speed and attenuation of a reciprocating impact-induced wave will yield quantitative information on the extent of total biodegradation in Southern Pine sapwood that has been attacked by natural populations of termites and decay fung

PUBLICATION II Resistance of pine and spruce heartwood against decay – The effect of wood chemical composition and coating with water-borne wood oil product
Natural durability of wood has been widely studied, but the combination of the natural durability and different treatments has not been the focus of many studies. The durability of wooden products is mainly based on the water permeability and the resistance against organisms. In this study, the water absorption and decay resistance of sapwood and heartwood of Scots pine and Norway spruce were e...
متن کاملResistance of eastern redcedar
This study investigated resistance ofexperimental particleboard-chip panels manufactured from eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) to feeding by the wood-destroying eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermesjlavipes (Kollar). Eastern redcedar raw chips with or without foliage, and 2.5 by 2.5 by 1.3-cm rectangular blocks of single-layer or triple-layer particleboard-chip panels with or w...
متن کاملThe role of particle size of particulate nano-zinc oxide wood preservatives on termite mortality and leach resistance
Historically most residential wood preservatives were aqueous soluble metal formulations, but recently metals ground to submicron size and dispersed in water to give particulate formulations have gained importance. In this study, the specific role nano-zinc oxide (ZnO) particle size and leach resistance plays in termite mortality resulting from exposure to particulate ZnO-treated wood was inves...
متن کاملPreferences of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki and Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae) among Three Commercial Wood Species
The Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, and the Asian subterranean termite, Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann), are both pests of wood in service in Hawaii and Florida. We conducted a laboratory study using method modified from those described in standard E1-09 of the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA 2009) to assess the termite resistance of three commercially av...
متن کاملRelative In Vitro Wood Decay Resistance of Sapwood from Landscape Trees of Southern Temperate Regions
The development of wood decay caused by 12 major root-rot and trunk-rot fungi was investigated in vitro with sapwood extracted from nine ornamental and landscape hardwood and conifer species native to southern temperate regions of North America, Europe, and the lower Mississippi Delta. Wood decay rates based on dry weight loss for 108 host tree–wood decay fungi combinations were compared at 21 ...
