Galaxy threshing and the formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies

چکیده
Recent spectroscopic and morphological observational studies of galaxies around NGC 1399 in the Fornax Cluster (Drinkwater et al. 2000b) have discovered several ‘ultra-compact dwarf’ galaxies with intrinsic sizes of ∼ 100 pc and absolute B band magnitudes ranging from −13 to −11 mag. In order to elucidate the origin of these enigmatic objects, we perform numerical simulations on the dynamical evolution of nucleated dwarf galaxies orbiting NGC 1399 and suffering from its strong tidal gravitational field. Adopting a plausible scaling relation for dwarf galaxies, we find that the outer stellar components of a nucleated dwarf are totally removed. This is due to them being tidally stripped over the course of several passages past the central region of NGC 1399. The nucleus, however, manages to survive. We also find that the size and luminosity of the remnant are similar to those observed for ultra-compact dwarf galaxies, if the simulated precursor nucleated dwarf has a mass of ∼ 10 M . These results suggest that ultra-compact dwarf galaxies could have previously been more luminous dwarf spheroidal or elliptical galaxies with rather compact nuclei. Formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies: tests of the galaxy threshing scenario in Fornax
This paper investigates the possibility that ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax cluster are formed by the threshing of nucleated, early-type dwarf galaxies (hereafter dwarf galaxies). Similar to the results of Côté et al. for the Virgo cluster, we show that the Fornax cluster observations are consistent with a single population in which all dwarfs are nucleated, with a ratio of nu...
متن کاملOrigin of lower velocity dispersions of ultra-compact dwarf galaxy populations in clusters of galaxies
Recent observations have revealed that velocity dispersions of “ultra-compact dwarf” (UCD) galaxies are significantly smaller than those of other galaxy populations in the Fornax and the Virgo clusters of galaxies. In order to understand the origin of the observed lower velocity dispersions of UCDs, we numerically investigate line-of-sight velocity dispersion (σlos) of galaxy populations with v...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملGalaxy threshing and the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster
A recent all-object spectroscopic survey centred on the Fornax cluster of galaxies, has discovered a population of sub-luminous and extremely compact members, called “ultra-compact dwarf” (UCD) galaxies. In order to clarify the origin of these objects, we have used self-consistent numerical simulations to study the dynamical evolution a nucleated dwarf galaxy would undergo if orbiting the cente...
متن کاملThe properties of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies and their possible origin
In this contribution the discovery and properties of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies are presented, and their possible origin is discussed. This new type of galaxy resides in the cores of galaxy clusters. In the fundamental plane diagram of stellar systems, the luminosity and kinematical and structural properties of ultra-compact dwarfs locate them inbetween globular clusters and small compact ell...
