Antarctic marine biology

چکیده
David K.A. Barnes and Andrew Clarke Primer interfering with the ability of a second species to locate mates. This could be the result of the one species’ calls simply masking those of the other, or it could be that the calls confuse individuals of the second species and cause them to approach heterospecific callers rather than those of their own species. Such signal jamming can also occur within a sex. For instance, among two species of Amazonian frog, there is selection for decreased sensitivity in male Allobates femoralis to calls that fall within the range of Epipedobates trivittatus calls in areas where the two species overlap (Figure 1). That way A. femoralis might avoid interference resulting from the overlapping frequency range of E. trivittatus calls. As these calls form the basis of male–male communication in these territorial frogs, responses to E. trivittatus calls by A. femoralis males could represent both signal jamming and heterospecific rivalry.

Marine Biology: New Light on Growth in the Cold
The recent collapse of the Antarctic Larson ice shelves revealed a slow growing benthic community on the seabed below. But a revisit just four years later revealed rapid growth of glass sponges. Antarctic continental shelves could become sites of significant carbon sequestration.
متن کاملAcclimation and thermal tolerance in Antarctic marine ectotherms.
Antarctic marine species have evolved in one of the coldest and most temperature-stable marine environments on Earth. They have long been classified as being stenothermal, or having a poor capacity to resist warming. Here we show that their ability to acclimate their physiology to elevated temperatures is poor compared with species from temperate latitudes, and similar to those from the tropics...

متن کاملNutrient Cycling: Are Antarctic Krill a Previously Overlooked Source in the Marine Iron Cycle?
Iron limits phytoplankton growth in large areas of the Southern Ocean. A new study shows that Antarctic krill play a crucial role in the recycling of iron in the iron-limited waters.
متن کاملOverview of the chemical ecology of benthic marine invertebrates along the western Antarctic peninsula.
Thirteen years ago in a review that appeared in the American Zoologist, we presented the first survey of the chemical and ecological bioactivity of Antarctic shallow-water marine invertebrates. In essence, we reported that despite theoretical predictions to the contrary the incidence of chemical defenses among sessile and sluggish Antarctic marine invertebrates was widespread. Since that time w...
متن کاملAntarctic Marine Biodiversity and Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents
The diversity of many marine benthic groups is unlike that of most other taxa. Rather than declining from the tropics to the poles, much of the benthos shows high diversity in the Southern Ocean. Moreover, many species are unique to the Antarctic region. Recent work has shown that this is also true of the communities of Antarctic deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Vent ecosystems have been documented...
