چکیده
OBJECTIVES This paper aims at comparing cardiorespiratory functional capacity during exercise--represented by indicators of functional limitation, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and anaerobic threshold--plus cardiopulmonary responses to maximal exercise in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients belonging to different age groups. METHODS Fifty-four CHF patients, stratified by age group, were evaluated as follows: group I--30 to 39 years (n = 12); group II--40 to 49 years (n = 18); group III--50 to 59 years (n = 17); and group IV--60 years and above (n = 7). All patients underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) on treadmills. A single-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to compare different age groups. RESULTS No significant differences were found in maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic threshold among the age groups, nor in maximal values for carbon dioxide production, oxygen pulse, respiratory exchange ratio, pulmonary ventilation, and ventilatory equivalents for oxygen and carbon dioxide. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that cardiorespiratory functional capacity during exercise in patients with CHF, as well as cardiopulmonary variables at maximal exercise, may be similarly affected by the heart disease in all studied age groups.

CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE IN CHILDREN: A SURVEY OF 114 PATIENTS
During a period of four years between June, IS, 1988 to June, IS, 1992 one hundred and fourteen patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) were admitted to the pediatric department of Taleghani General Hospital. During the above period, 192 patients with heart disease were hospitalized at this department and CHF was the cause of admission in 59.4% of them. Congenital heart disease (CHO) w...
متن کاملThe Effectiveness of Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Intervention on Quality of Life in Patients with Congestive Heart Failure via Cognitive-Behavioral Procedure
Introduction: Reduced quality of life in cardiac patients and their frequent hospitalizations in the coronary care units is regarded as a main challenge for such patients. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle promotion intervention on quality of life in patients with congestive heart failure via cognitive-behavioral procedure. Methods: In this randomi...
متن کاملVentilatory response to carbon dioxide output in subjects with congestive heart failure and in patients with COPD with comparable exercise capacity.
BACKGROUND Patients with congestive heart failure or COPD may share an increased response in minute ventilation (V̇E) to carbon dioxide output (V̇CO2 ) during exercise. The goal of this study was to ascertain whether the V̇E/V̇CO2 slope and V̇E/V̇CO2 intercept can discriminate between subjects with congestive heart failure and those with COPD at equal peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2 ). METHODS We studied 4...

Objective: Congestive heart failure (CHF) has become one of the most important health care problems in western countries. This article focuses on the outpatient diagnosis and management of heart failure. We want to compare the outcome of patients who were treated with high dose diuretics in the emergency department (ED) without admission with patients who were admitted to hospi...
