SeaWinds views Greenland

چکیده
AbstructData from the Ku-band SeaWinds scatterometer is used to investigate the extent of the ice facies in Greenland. The duration of the summer melt over the Greenland ice sheet is calculated using the temporal signature of the SeaWinds data. Daily ascending and descending enhanced resolution radar backscatter images of Greenland are produced to investigate diurnal variations in backscatter measurements. These are compared with diurnal variations in the brightness temperature measured by SSM/I. Multi-annual changes in the GTeenland ice sheet are studied by comparing 1999 SeaWinds data to 1996 NSCAT data.

Azimuth variation in microwave backscatter over the Greenland ice sheet - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2001. IGARSS '01. IEEE 2001 International
Scatterometer backscatter measurements are becoming an important tool for monitoring the dynamic behavior of the Greenland ice sheet. However, most Greenland studies assume constant backscatter for varying azimuth angles. Detailed analysis of scatterometer data sets show non-negligible (1-2 dB) azimuth modulation. The magnitude and orientation of the azimuth modulation observed by SeaWinds, NSC...
متن کاملMulti-Annual Changes in Microwave Backscatter over the Greenland Ice Sheet
Changes in the location of key ice facies/zones on the Greenland ice sheet are considered key indicators of global climate change, Microwave scatterometers are effective tools for monitoring these changes. Measurements for three Ku-band scatterometers, SASS (1978), NSCAT (1996), and SeaWinds (1999-present), span a 23 years period. while the ERS scatterometer (C-band) offers a continuous 9 year ...
متن کاملIncreasing Temporal Resolution in Greenland Ablation Estimation Using Passive and Active Microwave Data
Increasing the accuracy of melt estimation using microwave instruments by focusing on sub-day time scales is addressed. Three Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) instruments operating simultaneously over the summer of 2002 are combined to estimate brightness temperature (Tb) over daily cycles. Normalized radar cross-section (σ) measurements from SeaWinds on QuikSCAT are employed to provide ...
متن کاملThe Scatterometer Climate Record Pathfinder
While originally designed for ocean wind measurement, radar scatterometers have proven to be very effective in monitoring land cover and ice conditions and in climate studies. The NASA Scatterometer Climate Record Pathfinder (SCP) project has generated a unique climate data record from the series of historic and ongoing scatterometer missions. Image data are archived from the SeaWinds on QuikSC...

Designed to retrieve near-surface winds over the ocean, the SeaWinds scatterometer makes 13.4 GHz Ku-band measurements of the normalized radar backscatter of the Earth’s surface. SeaWinds backscatter measurements are being used in a wide variety of studies, including ocean wind retrieval, sea-ice mapping and classification, iceberg tracking, vegetation, soil moisture, and snow accumulation. Two...
