SYMPOSIUM: ENVIRONMENTAL RISK FACTORS FOR LAMINITIS Environmental Influences On Claw Horn Lesions Associated With Laminitis And Sub-acute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) In Dairy Cows
نویسندگان
چکیده
A dairy cow’s environment may influence the onset of laminitis and associated claw horn lesions by exacerbating changes in the hoof triggered by events at parturition, onset of subacute ruminal acidosis, or claw horn growth and wear and ground reaction forces on different walking surfaces. Environmental risk factors for laminitis and associated claw horn lesions include feed bunk space and design, pen layout, overstocking, heat stress, stall use behavior and exposure to concrete and other types of walking surfaces. New evidence suggests that cow environment may be the final determinant of the degree of laminitis and lameness observed on dairy farms. (

SYMPOSIUM: LAMINITIS INVESTIGATIONS Investigation Strategies for Laminitis Problem Herds
Lameness in dairy cows includes many disease conditions, and a systematic approach is required to diagnose the predominant causes and identify the important risk factors. Lameness prevalence can be quantified using locomotion scoring systems. Entire herds can be scored quite easily as they walk access lanes. If lameness prevalence exceeds 15% of the herd, it is important to differentiate the ca...
متن کاملReduced test-day milk fat percentage in cows diagnosed with claw horn lesions during routine claw trimming.
The objective of this study was to investigate whether cows diagnosed with claw horn lesions during routine claw trimming had an altered milk fat percentage on test days preceding the diagnosis, compared with cows without such lesions. Data included date of trimming, cow number, type, and location of claw lesions recorded by a professional claw trimmer during routine trimming sessions on 11 com...
متن کاملPathogenesis of Sole Lesions Attributed to Laminitis in Cattle
Introduction In cattle, lesions in the sole usually attributed to laminitis include haemorrhages in the horn, double soles, ulcers in the sole and toe, haemorrhage and separation of the white line, as well as deformation of the whole surface (“dropped sole”) (Ossent and others, 1997). Other authors used the term claw horn disruption (CHD) (Clarkson and others, 1996; Hoblet and Weiss, 2001). Usu...
متن کاملRelationship between herd-level incidence rate of energy-related postpartum diseases, general risk factors and claw lesions in individual dairy cows recorded at maintenance claw trimming
BACKGROUND Laminitis and energy-related postpartum diseases share several risk factors, indicating a common etiology. Thus, a herd's incidence rate of energy-related postpartum diseases, such as displaced abomasum and clinical ketosis, might reflect the likelihood of cows to suffer from laminitis-related claw lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between herd-level i...
متن کاملEffective Fiber for Dairy Cows
Unlike other nutrients, such as protein and calcium, where requirements are provided in grams per cow per day for specific body weight and milk production levels, fiber “requirements” are merely minimum guidelines (NRC, 2001) aimed at maintaining normal ruminal pH, fiber digestion and milk fat test and preventing sub-acute rumen acidosis (SARA), laminitis and displaced abomasums (LDA). NRC (200...
