چکیده

Objectives: To assess the body composition of recreational cold-water swimmers, to determine if cold-water swimmers have an increased % body fat when compared to average Americans, and to examine the relationships between body composition and total swim distance and time in the water per swim. Methods: Following 3 months of swimming regularly in cold water in the San Francisco Bay (water temperature range: 9.6° C [49.3° F] to 12.6° C [54.7° F]) during the winter months, body mass index (BMI), % body fat (assessed by circumference technique), and surface/volume ratio were measured in 88 subjects (70 men and 18 women). The total cumulative swim distance was recorded by each subject and each subject estimated his or her average time in the water

The Body Mass Index of San Francisco Cold-water Swimmers: Comparisons to U.S. National and Local Populations, and Pool Swimmers

To determine if cold-water swimmers have substantial differences in BMI, which might have a protective effect against heat loss during swims in cold water without wetsuits, and to determine if obesity is more or less prevalent in cold-water swimmers, we compared the body mass index (BMI) values of 103 recreational open-water swimmers (mean age 54.3 ±10.8 years) to data from various population g...

Repeated sprint ability in elite water polo players and swimmers and its relationship to aerobic and anaerobic performance.

The purpose of this study was to determine indices of swimming repeated sprint ability (RSA) in 19 elite water polo players compared to 16 elite swimmers during a repeated sprint swimming test (RST), and to examine the relationships between these indices and aerobic and anaerobic performance capabilities in both groups. Indices of RSA were determined by the ideal sprint time (IS), the total spr...

Expression of estrogenic response genes to different concentration of 17ß-estradiol in male mosquitofish (Gambusia yucatana)

The proximate composition, amino acids and fatty acids composition in the muscle of wild, inshore and offshore cage-cultured large yellow croaker, Pseudosciaena crocea (Richardson, 1846), were determined to identify nutritional differences. Wild fish groups showed highest content of moisture and crude protein, but the lowest lipid content. Offshore cage-cultured fish showed significantly higher...
