چکیده

Dynamical behaviors of dust particles are governed by gas drag forces in a variety of environments of astrophysical interest, such as protoplanetary disks, upper planetary atmospheres or cometary coma. Monte Carlo (MC) and Quasi Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations have been performed to estimate the drag forces on fluffy aggregates in the free molecular limit, using two different models of molecule-surface interaction. The new computational scheme involves the concurrent evaluation of the rate of molecular collisions and the momentum transfer efficiency. It is found that the gas drag forces on a fluffy aggregate can be approximated by those on a sphere of equivalent area. The deviation from this approximation depends on the model of the molecule-surface interaction and on the size, structure, velocity and especially the orientation of the aggregate. The anisotropy of the drag force is mainly caused by the variation of the projected area when the velocity S, normalized by the mean thermal velocity of the gas, is larger than 1 and by multiple reflections of incident molecules when S < 1.

The Grain Impact Analyzer and Dust Accumulator (GIADA) instrument on board ESA’s Rosetta mission is constraining the origin of the dust particles detected within the coma of comet 67 P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). The collected particles belong to two families: (i) compact particles (ranging in size from 0.03 to 1 mm), witnessing the presence of materials that underwent processing within the so...

Simulation of Pre-planetesimal Collisions with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

It is widely accepted that planets form in protoplanetary discs. These discs, which are produced as a byproduct of stars in the collapse of a molecular cloud [23], initially consist of gas and dust, which interact with each other. The interaction induces size-dependent relative velocities between dust aggregates: the effects of Brownian motion, radial drift, vertical settling, and turbulent mix...

Drag force, diffusion coefficient, and electric mobility of small particles. I. Theory applicable to the free-molecule regime.

The transport of small particles in the free-molecule regime is investigated on the basis of gas kinetic theory. Drag force formulations were derived in two limiting collision models-namely, specular and diffuse scattering-by considering the potential force of interactions between the particle and fluid molecules. A parametrized drag coefficient equation is proposed and accounts for the transit...

Coulomb drag between disordered two-dimensional electron-gas layers.

We derive and evaluate expressions for the frictional Coulomb drag between disordered two-dimensional electron gas layers. Our derivation is based on the memory-function formalism and the expression for the drag reduces to previously known results in the ballistic limit. We find that Coulomb drag is appreciably enhanced by disorder at low temperatures when the mean-free-path within a layer is c...
