Role of BCG in Treatment of Bladder Cancer
نویسنده
چکیده
Aim: This review is written to describe the role of immunotherapy in cancer treatment. Annually, 13,000 deaths result from bladder cancer. Since the first report of intravesical use of BCG in 1976, investigators try to understand the working mechanism of BCG as an antitumour modality. Arbitrarily, BCG therapy consists of a single course of six weekly intravesical instillations. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, was developed by Calmette and Guérin with the intention to generate a vaccine against tuberculosis. Extension of BCG treatment (maintenance immunotherapy) is used to increase efficacy. Results of various experiments describe that after instillation in the bladder, BCG accumulates near the bladder wall and is internalised and processed by professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and (highgrade) tumour cells. Then BCG antigens are presented to CD4+ T cells. Then local synthesis of a particular set of cytokines or cell-mediated immune response. NK cells may be involved in tumour cell

Role of MicroRNAs in BCG Therapy by the Induction of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Bladder Cancer
The treatment of bladder cancer is usually performed by Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) instillation. BCG therapy is a common therapeutic method with fewer side effects compared with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc. BCG can also inhibit the progression and recurrence of bladder cancer by inducing apoptosis pathways, arrest cell cycle, autophagy, and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formatio...

Introduction: Anticancer effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus, as a probiotic bacterium, have been indicated in several studies. There are common therapeutic options for bladder cancer treatment; however, their side effects and recurrence of disease are considerable. Therefore, complementary medication is essential and it must be safe and effective. In the present research, we assessed the anti...
متن کاملRole of IL-10 in Urinary Bladder Carcinoma and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Immunotherapy
Problem statement: Bladder cancer is a common urologic cancer and intravesical Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the mainstay in the treatment of superficial bladder cancer. However, the current BCG therapy is not desirable with respect to its efficacy and side effects. Interleukin (IL)-10, a T helper type (Th) 2 cytokine, plays an important regulatory role in bladder cancer...

The treatment of choice for bladder tumors is TUR, but because of high incidence of recurrence in these tumors, various treatments are suggested. In one study, 32 patients involved with superficial T.C.C. of bladder selected and divided in two equal groups. In the first group, after T.U.R, 10 million IU of a alpha-interferon was injected into the bladder through a catheter and in the other grou...
متن کاملIntravesical Chemotherapy and BCG for the Treatment of Bladder Cancer: Evidence and Opinion
Objectives: Review the chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic options for post-resection intravesical treatment of low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (bCA). Design, Setting, and Participants: The authors conducted a review of the literature on chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens used to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and progression after tra...
