Proton Transfer in Mixed Water-Organic Solvent Solutions: Correlation between Rate, Equilibrium Constant, and the Proton Free Energy of Transfer

چکیده
We demonstrate that the proton dissociation reaction of excited 1-aminopyrene follows a simple structure-reactivity correlation in water-methanol, water-DMSO, water-dioxane, and wateracetonitrile binary mixtures. The role of the proton free energy of transfer from pure water to the binary mixtures, AGtwqS(H+) in determining the rate of transfer is also demonstrated. We have extended our analysis to include neutral ROH type photoacids where the simultaneous creation of the anion during proton transfer affects the energetics of the dissociation reaction in the mixed solvents as compared to pure water.

Excited-State Proton Transfer to Methanol-Water Mixtures
We have measured the fluorescence decay of I-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate due to proton transfer to solvent in water-methanol mixtures. The data agree quantitatively with the reversible, diffusion-influenced proton-transfer mechanism in all solutions. No significant deviations from a short-time exponential decay or a long-time power law decay were found that could support a recently suggest...
متن کاملDerivation of rate expressions for nonadiabatic proton-coupled electron transfer reactions in solution
This paper presents a derivation of rate expressions for nonadiabatic proton-coupled electron transfer ~PCET! reactions in solution. The derivation is based on a multistate continuum theory in which the solvent is described by a dielectric continuum, the solute is represented by a multistate valence bond model, and the transferring proton~s! are treated quantum mechanically. In this formulation...
متن کاملApplication of Electrochemistry to Determination of Transfer Gibbs Energies and Autoprotolysis Constants for Aqueous Mixtures of Dimethyl Sulfoxide
A practical potentiometric method was applied successfully to experimental electrochemical data in order to determine the autoprotolysis constants (pKap) of water + dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures containing 0-90 % of DMSO by volume at 25° C and 0.1 M ionic strength was maintained in each mixture by NaClO4 solution. The results indicated that water-DMSO mixtures are more basic media than pure water...
متن کاملComputational study of the intramolecular proton transfer between 6-hydroxypicolinic acid tautomeric forms and intermolecular hydrogen bonding in their dimers
This paper is a density functional theory (DFT) calculation of intramolecular proton transfer (IPT) in 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (6HPA, 6-hydroxypyridine-2-carboxylic acid) tautomeric forms. The transition state for the enol-to-keto transition is reported in the gas phase and in four different solvents. The planar and non-planar dimer forms of 6HPA keto and enol, respectively, were also studied i...
متن کاملSolvent dependence of excited-state proton transfer from pyranine-derived photoacids.
Steady-state and time-resolved techniques were employed to study the excited-state proton-transfer (ESPT) rate of two newly synthesized 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-pyrenetrisulfonate (pyranine, HPTS) derived photoacids in three protic solvents, water, methanol and ethanol. The ESPT rate constant k(PT) of tris(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-yl)-8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate, 1a, whose pK(a)* ~ -4, in w...
