Dust emission from the most distant quasars

چکیده
We report observations of three SDSS z > 6 QSOs at 250 GHz (1.2 mm) using the 117-channel MaxPlanck Millimeter Bolometer (MAMBO-2) array at the IRAM 30-meter telescope. J1148+5251 (z = 6.41) and J1048+4637 (z = 6.23) were detected with 250 GHz flux densities of 5.0±0.6mJy and 3.0±0.4 mJy, respectively. J1630+4012 (z = 6.05) was not detected with a 3σ upper limit of 1.8 mJy. Upper flux density limits from VLA observations at 43 GHz for J1148+5251 and J1048+4637 imply steeply rising spectra, indicative of thermal infrared emission from warm dust. The far-infrared luminosities are estimated to be ≈ 10 L⊙, and the dust masses ≈ 10 M⊙, assuming Galactic dust properties. The presence of large amounts of dust in the highest redshift QSOs indicates that dust formation must be rapid during the early evolution of QSO host galaxies. Dust absorption may hinder the escape of ionizing photons which reionize the intergalactic medium at this early epoch.

Detection of dust in the most distant known radiogalaxy
A search for millimetric continuum emission from eight optically-selected, radio-quiet quasars and a radiogalaxy with 3.7 < z < 4.3, has been undertaken using a highly sensitive 7-channel bolometer on the IRAM 30-m Millimetre Radio Telescope. Detections of a potentially dust-rich quasar, and of 8C1435+635, the most distant known radiogalaxy, are reported. An extrapolation of the steepening cent...
متن کاملExtreme gas properties in the most distant quasars
We present near-IR, low resolution spectra of eight of the most distant quasars known, with redshifts in the range 4.9<z<6.4. Half of these quasars are characterized by deep, broad and blueshifted absorption features associated with both high and low ionization species (CIV, SiIV, AlIII, MgII), i.e. they belong to the class of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars, which are associated with power...
متن کاملFour Quasars above Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey
The Canada-France High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS) is an optical survey designed to locate quasars during the epoch of reionization. In this paper we present the discovery of the first four CFHQS quasars at redshift greater than 6, including the most distant known quasar, CFHQS J2329-0301 at z = 6.43. We describe the observational method used to identify the quasars and present optical, infrared, a...
متن کاملModeling the Dust Properties of Z ∼ 6 Quasars with Art2 — All-wavelength Radiative Transfer with Adaptive Refinement Tree
The detection of large quantities of dust in z ∼ 6 quasars by infrared and radio surveys presents puzzles for the formation and evolution of dust in these early systems. Previously (Li et al. 2007), we showed that luminous quasars at z & 6 can form through hierarchical mergers of gas-rich galaxies, and that these systems are expected to evolve from starburst through quasar phases. Here, we calc...
متن کاملAn unusual iron Lo-BAL quasar detected by ISOCAM
We report the discovery of an unusual low–ionization broad absorption line quasar at z = 1.776 which exhibits absorption lines from many excited states of Fe ii. This member of the rare class of ’FeLoBAL’ quasars was serendipitously found in a mid–infrared (MIR) survey of distant clusters carried out with the ISOCAM camera. ISO J005645.1−273816 has a high MIR to UV luminosity ratio, suggesting ...
