چکیده

Engineers dealing with noise reduction in habitations close to transportation traffic or industrial facilities encounter several problems to decrease noise level in rooms at low frequencies. Passive materials and current building construction knowledge enable to avoid noise transmission in habitations at medium and high frequencies and the regulations based on the dBA scale can often be respected. But these regulations do not take into account the real annoyance of noise for the inhabitants who are still disturbed by low frequency noise. Because of the modal behavior of rooms, air-borne and structure-borne noise generate high sound pressure level at the first modal frequencies, even with small amount of energy. In order to lower the annoyance induced by low-frequency behavior in rooms, huge compliant wooden panels can be used, though with quite low performances in terms of resonances damping. An alternative can be found with bass-traps, comprising a mechanical resonator and a closedbox, with fixed acoustic performance at specific frequency. Enhanced performances can even be obtained with closed-box shunt loudspeakers, where the acoustic impedance of the loudspeaker's diaphragm around its resonance can be modified (in terms of magnitude and also in frequency) by way of a simple passive electrical device, providing the requested complementary complex acoustic impedance for perfect absorption at the first modal frequencies. The present work describes the design of a small array of low-frequency shunt loudspeakers, dedicated to damp a certain amount of modes within a known room. Assessment in laboratory conditions (impedance tube, reverberant chamber) will then be presented and compared to simulations, leading to concluding remarks on practical issues on the applicability of the concept of shunt loudspeakers for low-frequency noise reduction in habitations.

Loudspeakers and Rooms for Sound Reproduction—A Scientific Review*

The physical measures by which acousticians evaluate the performance of rooms have evolved in large performance spaces—concert halls. They rely on assumptions that become progressively less valid as spaces get smaller and more acoustically absorptive. In listening rooms the loudspeakers and the rooms interact differently below and above a transition region around 300 Hz, similar to the Schroede...

A Directional Loudspeaker Array for Surround Sound in Reverberant Rooms

We present a method to enhance the performance of the sound field reproduction approach to 2-D surround sound applicable for reverberant rooms, under the constraint that only a small number of loudspeakers is permissible. The method is based on the idea of using steerable directional loudspeakers to exploit the room reverberation. In home theater applications, exact sound field reproduction is ...

The loudspeaker as musical instrument: an examination of the issues surrounding loudspeaker performance of music in typical rooms

The loudspeaker is the most important and one of the most variable elements in the electroacoustic music performance process. Nonetheless, its performance is subject to a “willing suspension of disbelief” by listeners. In addition, its behavior and variability are usually not accounted for in assessments of the quality of music reproduction or music instrument synthesis, especially as they occu...

Acoustic Impedance Synthesis at the Di- Aphragm of Moving Coil Loudspeakers Using Output Feedback Control

This paper discusses a time-domain technique for synthesizing acoustic impedance at the diaphragm of a loudspeaker using a proportional-plus-derivative output feedback. The dynamics of electroacoustic transducers such as moving-coil loudspeakers can be readily controlled either by direct feedback principle on acoustic quantities, or by plugging a shunt network at the electrical terminals. Any c...

Electroacoustic absorbers: bridging the gap between shunt loudspeakers and active sound absorption.

The acoustic impedance at the diaphragm of an electroacoustic transducer can be varied using a range of basic electrical control strategies, amongst which are electrical shunt circuits. These passive shunt techniques are compared to active acoustic feedback techniques for controlling the acoustic impedance of an electroacoustic transducer. The formulation of feedback-based acoustic impedance co...
