چکیده

A group of Dutch and Cantonese listeners were compared on a audio-visual speech perception task. Using video techniques, lipmovements of syllables were dubbed on a speech signal such that the heard and seen place of articulation d id not match [4]. The Cantonese participants were more influenced by vision than the Dutch. We suggest that the phonological repertoire has an influence on audio-visual speech perception.

Effect of Language Experience on the Categorical Perception of Cantonese Vowel Duration

This study investigated the effect of language experience on the categorical perception of Cantonese vowel duration distinction. By comparing Cantonese and Mandarin listeners’ performances, we found that: (1) duration change elicited categorical perception in the performance of Cantonese listeners, but not in Mandarin listeners; (2) Cantonese listeners were affected by the vowel quality differe...

The Effect of Tonal Information on Auditory Reliance in the McGurk Effect

The McGurk effect occurs when conflicting auditory and visual speech information result in an emergent percept. The incidence of the McGurk effect is greater for speakers of English than Japanese, and in turn for speakers of Japanese than Cantonese. Sekiyama postulates that this is because speakers of tonal languages rely more upon auditory than visual information in speech perception. Here thi...

The effect of intertalker variations on acoustic-perceptual mapping in Cantonese and Mandarin tone systems.

PURPOSE This study investigates the impact of intertalker variations on the process of mapping acoustic variations on tone categories in two different tone languages. METHOD Pitch stimuli manipulated from four voice ranges were presented in isolation through a blocked-talker design. Listeners were instructed to identify the stimuli that they heard as lexical tones in their native language. ...

Perceptual normalization for inter- and intratalker variation in Cantonese level tones.

Inter- and intratalker variation in the production of lexical tones may contribute to acoustic overlap among tone categories. The present study investigated whether such category overlap gives rise to perceptual ambiguity and, if so, whether listeners are able to reduce this ambiguity using contextual information. In the first experiment, native Cantonese-speaking listeners were asked to identi...

The Perception and Production of Phones and Tones: The Role of Rigid and Non-Rigid Face and Head Motion

There is evidence, mostly with phones (consonants & vowels), that visual concomitants of articulation facilitate speech perception. Here the visual concomitants of lexical tone are considered. In tone languages fundamental frequency variations signal lexical meaning. In a word identification experiment with auditory-visual words differing only in tone, Cantonese perceivers performed above chanc...
