چکیده

[1] Two time series of deep ocean bottom pressure records (BPRs) in between the Crozet Islands and Kerguelen are compared with GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) equivalent water heights. An analysis of the correlation is performed for four time series: 1) monthly averages of the equivalent water height at the Crozet Islands, 2) the same near the Kerguelen Islands, 3) the mean of the two preceding series and 4) the difference between the two locations expressed in terms of geostrophic transport. We find that smoothed GRACE solutions are strongly correlated with the BPR data with correlation coefficients in the order of 0.7–0.8. Consequently GRACE measures real oceanic mass variations in this region. Citation: Rietbroek, R., P. LeGrand, B. Wouters, J.-M. Lemoine, G. Ramillien, and C. W. A comparison of in situ bottom pressure array measurements with GRACE estimates in the Kuroshio Extension

[1] Ocean bottom pressure estimates from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) have been validated by comparisons with an array of in situ bottom pressure measurements. The 600 km by 600 km array comprised 46 bottom pressure sensors that were part of the Kuroshio Extension System Study (KESS). Validations in other ocean regions have been limited by available data to pointwise bottom p...

Validation of Oceanic Mass Changes derived from GRACE Gravimetry

The satellite mission GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) provides monthly solutions of the global gravity field of the Earth. Temporal variations in gravity reflect mass redistributions over the Earth. Those mass movements are caused by physical phenomena such as ice sheet dynamics, accumulation of hydrological masses over land, the dynamics in the solid Earth and the dynamics in t...

A tale of three islands: Downstream natural iron fertilization in the Southern Ocean

Iron limitation of primary productivity prevails across much of the Southern Ocean but there are exceptions; in particular, the phytoplankton blooms associated with the Kerguelen Plateau, Crozet Islands, and South Georgia. These blooms occur annually, fertilized by iron and nutrient-rich shelf waters that are transported downstream from the islands. Here we use a high-resolution (1/128) ocean g...

Water Cycle and Climate Signals in Africa Observed by Satellite Gravimetry

The availability of hydrologic data is an important step for hydrological modeling and water resource management in the world. Unfortunately, the in situ observations with the right characteristics are very sparse globally, particularly in Africa. Understanding the climate variability of Africa and its prominent role as the heat engine of the global climate system is one of the key goals in cli...
